Tasmania Police Constable Keith Smith has been farewelled at a police funeral with full ceremonial honours in Devonport after he was shot dead while on duty in Northern Tasmania last week.

Glowing tributes from colleagues for Constable Smith were shared at a packed service, followed by an honour guard through the streets of Devonport.

The family of Constable Smith say they are "sincerely grateful for the support, compassion and respect shown to our family during this time. It has brought some comfort, in the midst of our immense grief".

A 1.2metre bear was found prowling the runway of Yamagata Airport on Thursday forcing a pause on operations.

Japanese broadcaster Nippon TV reported that 10 flights were cancelled between Yamagata Prefecture and Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo and Nagoya.

The bear was found on the runway at around 7:00 am, disappearing for a while, before returning, forcing the runway to close from 11:55 am.

Hunters have set up traps on airport grounds.

Bear sightings had been reported in the area since the evening of June 25. Officials believe the one that showed up in the airport is the same one.
