Shares in Virgin Australia have risen more than 11 per cent on the first day of trade on the ASX, surpassing its initial public offering price of $2.90 a share. Virgin delisted in 2020, after it collapsed into voluntary administration, before being bought by private equity firm Bain Capital.
News of the temporary closure of Qatar's airspace threatened to overshadow Virgin's float, with two of its flights diverted. The airline's chief executive Dave Emerson says he expects flights through Doha today to be delayed but for it to be "business as usual from there", with customers having the option to change or cancel for a refund if they are not comfortable travelling. Qatar Airways became a major shareholder this year, bringing with it expanded access to international routes.
After the company resumed trade on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) on Tuesday afternoon, Virgin shares ended 11.4 per cent higher, at $3.23. At the completion of the IPO, Bain's stake in Virgin was reduced to about 40 per cent, while Qatar retains 23.4 per cent. Virgin management hold 7.8 per cent and new investors own the rest. The airline was not seeking to raise funds through the IPO, but rather to deliver a return to its existing owners, who would have their stake reduced.
