At least 11 people have died in a stampede outside a cricket stadium in Bengaluru, India, during an event to celebrate the winners of the Indian Premier League.

  • Terri Irwin argues crocodile culling proposal would increase likelihood of attacks | ABC NEWS
World-famous conservationist Terri Irwin has branded proposed legislation to allow crocodile culls and safari-style hunting trips as "dangerous" and a "recipe for disaster".
The legislation put forward by Katter's Australian Party (KAP) proposes the creation of a Queensland Crocodile Authority, which would be charged with implementing "zero-tolerance zones" in populated areas, where all crocodiles would be culled or relocated to farms or sanctuaries.

  • Men who subscribe to traditional stereotypes 17 X more likely to commit gendered violence | ABC NEWS
Opening up is hard — for men, in particular — because it's in stark opposition to social pressures and stereotypes that expect toughness and stoicism.
These pressures are fleshed out in a new campaign by Respect Victoria that has boiled down 18 months of research and conversations with Victorian men.
It found that men who subscribed to macho stereotypes that included aggression, suppressing emotion and hypersexuality were 17 times more likely to commit gendered violence.

  • US and China boxed into 'unmanageable situation', says China expert | The Business | ABC NEWS
Donald Trump's trade negotiations with China have, in the words of US treasury secretary Scott Bessant, " become a bit stalled..."
US media reports suggest the US president is pinning his hopes on a phone call with Chinese president Xi Jinping as soon as this week. But Trump himself is also sounding worried, recently posting on Truth Social, Xi is "extremely hard to make a deal with!!!" Gavekal partner and head of research, Arthur Kroeber has been writing about China policy and economic issues for more than 30 years. He has told The Business the only way to solve this stalemate is for the two leaders to talk to each other. He says China doesn't want to have a phone call that would put Xi Jinping in a bad position, so the country is being cautious. He says Beijing would prefer to lower the temperature of these negotiations, so they will have to engage in talks with Donald Trump. Arthur Kroeber says Donald Trump doesn't understand how trade and investment work or the interdependence of the US and China. He adds this is not just a tariff and trade war but a technology war.

  • Fancy being spied on? Documents reveal drone delivery complaints | The Business | ABC NEWS
Despite there being an estimated three million drones in Australia in 2024, there were very few complaints. But as ABC business reporter Daniel Ziffer investigates, that may be because the complaints process is too difficult to navigate.
Documents obtained by the ABC through the freedom of information process show the Department of Infrastructure logged nine complaints about noise from different trial sites, taking the total to 98 since 2020.
Some of the drone complaints not only mention noise, but also someone feeling "spied on" in the bath as drones flew overhead 28 times in three hours.
One of Australia's foremost experts in the field, UWA's Dr Julia Powles says the number of complaints about drone noise does not indicate community tolerance of the devices.
Dr Powles says the number of complaints was being used as "a proxy of community tolerance" for drones but she described it as a "poor metric", saying there's a real disservice to the public in allowing the number of complaints — which really are the most agitated individuals — to be the benchmark of what community acceptance would be.
The Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) runs safety rules for recreational drone operators. But it does not or cannot do anything about noise or privacy. The Office for the Australian Information Commissioner has advice for people concerned about drones, but no remedies. The privacy act does not cover camera or drone users who operate in a "private capacity"
Some state and territory governments have individual laws that impact drones, including those relating to privacy, trespass, harassment, intimidation, nuisance and endangering safety. Others do not. Drone delivery trials have been held in the ACT, Victoria and Queensland.

  • On the road with Solomon Islands’ domestic violence policewomen | The Pacific | ABC NEWS
According to government statistics, two out of three women in Solomon Islands have been physically abused by a partner — and more than 60% of men think it’s acceptable to hit a woman in certain circumstances.
In the capital Honiara, female police officers told our reporter Chrisnrita Aumanu-Leong how those attitudes sometimes influence the way law enforcement handles domestic violence cases.
Watch the full story here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMCcEUUp1Gg
Domestic abuse against Pacific women are among the highest rates in the world. In some places a ‘bride price’ is paid to a wife’s family when they get married meaning some victims won’t leave their abuser because they’ve been ‘paid for’. This video was taken from a multi-national special episode of The Pacific investigating domestic violence across the region. Some names and identities have been changed for legal and safety reasons.
Warning: This story contains graphic accounts of gender-based violence and sexual assault.
