Assistant Minister Andrew Leigh says former Labor minister and economist Craig Emerson didn't recommend adding hardware to the Food and Grocery Code of Conduct, because it's focused on the big supermarkets. He said the government's provided $30 million to competition watchdog, the ACCC, to give it more resources to look at misconduct across a host of sectors, including hardware.
Retail and industrial conglomerate Wesfarmers held its investor day, spruiking growth opportunities in its big brands like Kmart, Officeworks and Bunnings. Wesfarmers chief executive Rob Scott had a long standing commitment to appear on The Business but when staff at the program indicated he would face questions about Bunnings and its market dominance, the interview was cancelled. The hardware giant was recently the subject of the ABC's Four Corners program, which along with The Business aired allegations of anti-competitive behaviour and unfair treatment of suppliers.
