Protesters have attempted to breach the Israeli military’s headquarters in Tel Aviv, voicing their opposition to the Netanyahu government’s planned expansion of the war in Gaza.
Many of the protesters are relatives of hostages who are concerned upscaling Operation Gideon's Chariots could endanger their captive family members, describing the proposal as a ‘death sentence’ for hostages.
Israel’s cabinet is meeting to contemplate deploying troops into parts of Gaza not yet under Israeli control, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu aims to pressure Hamas into releasing the remaining hostages and agreeing to a ceasefire deal which favours Israel.
The IDF’s Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir has warned against the move, saying the current operation has so far failed to yield its desired results.
Meanwhile, the international community has accused Israel of allowing starvation to take place in Gaza, with Canada, the UK and France showing an intention to recognise Palestinian statehood.
