In this episode Kristian Silva and Stephen Stockwell explain the data analysis, including some of its limitations in pinpointing a person's precise movements.
If you've got questions about the case that you’d like Kristian and Stocky to answer in future episodes, send them through to [email protected] (mailto:[email protected])

  • Local share market snaps an eight-day winning streak | ABC News
Profit taking has seen Australian shares drop during the day's trade, with markets pricing in an expected interest rate cut from the Reserve Bank on Tuesday. The US has meanwhile lost its AAA credit rating from Moody's, off the back of the Trump administration's policies around tax cuts. It's the first time the Americans have had a ratings downgrade in over a century, as Alan Kohler explains.

  • Telstra and Vodafone go to war over coverage claims | The Business | ABC NEWS
Read Rhiana Whitson's story here: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-05-19/vodafone-tpg-claims-telstra-coverage-less-than-advertised/105300124
Vodafone has called on the ACCC to investigate Telstra for "misleading customers" over the extent of its mobile network coverage, which it says has resulted in an unfair market advantage.
In a rare public spat between major telcos, Vodafone alleges Telstra has engaged in misleading or deceptive conduct for more than 15 years, by overstating the reach of its mobile network by as much as 40 per cent.
Telstra's advertised claim that it has a "mobile network coverage area of 3 million square kilometres covering 99.7 per cent of the Australian population" had, until May this year, failed to state that the figure was based on consumers using an external antenna and booster. However, Telstra denies misleading consumers saying, "No matter how you look at it, Telstra's mobile network covers more of Australia than any other."
This story by Rhiana Whitson, voiced by Emilia Terzon.

  • RBA to cut rates in May, August and November, says Westpac chief economist | The Business | ABC NEWS
All of the big four banks are forecasting an interest rate cut from the Reserve Bank on Tuesday but the banks' economics teams views vary on when the next cut in the easing cycle will come. Westpac chief economist Luci Ellis is forecasting a cut in May, and pencilling in two further cuts in August and November 2025. Luci Ellis says while she does expect rate cuts will put upward pressure on house prices, population growth is slowing and the population pressure on rents and house prices has begun to unwind. She also addressed the Productivity Commission's decision to open consultation on 15 priority areas of productivity reform, including the company tax rate. On this point - Dr Ellis says tax isn't the area of reform she would start with because businesses are motivated to make their operations more efficient regardless of the tax rate.

  • IVF patient approved to use overseas sperm after agonising wait | ABC News
A Queensland IVF patient, who had to cancel her embryo transfer because it did not comply with new legislation, has been told she can proceed with her treatment.
The mother of one, who's in her late thirties, had used a donor from the US sperm bank Xytex for her first child, and to fertilise her frozen embryo.
Earlier this month, Monique — who asked we not use her real name — was told by her fertility clinic the treatment could not go ahead, because they didn't have the necessary information about her overseas donor.
