  • No single lever to lift productivity, says former Productivity Commission chair | The Business
The former chair of the Productivity Commission, Michael Brennan says Australia's Treasurer is right when he says improving productivity takes time, but Mr Brennan says the Labor government has made good progress in its first term and has a platform for further progress in its second. Now, the chief executive of economic research institute, e61, Mr Brennan says there's no single lever to magically lift productivity growth in the near term but it is important for governments to work in a methodical way to target it from day one. But he says productivity isn't always about what the government does but overwhelmingly what decisions are made in the private sector about the adoption of technology. Such decisions might include trying new business models, starting a new firm, and to innovate, research and develop. Mr Brennan says the stakes for Australia are particularly high when it comes to productivity in housing construction. He says because Australia's construction sector is larger as a share of the economy than it is in other OECD countries, slow productivity growth in construction hurts Australia more than it does in other developed economies.

  • Macquarie accused of 'systemic failures' by ASIC | The Business | ABC NEWS
The corporate regulator ASIC is suing the broking arm of Macquarie for alleged misreporting of up to $1.5 billion short sales over nearly 15 years. Short selling is a high-risk strategy that aims to profit off the price of a financial product falling. It's the fourth action the regulator has taken against the company in just over a year. The chair Joe Longo says this case demonstrates systemic failures over a long period of time at Macquarie Group and a level of complancy that's set in at the institution. He says ASIC repeatedly raised the short selling issue with Macquarie starting in 2015, but the company has failed to address it, leading the regulator to launch a civil lawsuit. Mr Longo says ASIC is not alleging the action was deliberate but he says it has serious ramifications as it obsures the transparency of Australia's financial markets and interferes with the regulator's understanding of how they're functioning. He says while Macquarie may be a long way away from losing its license, the regulator will continue to pursue it until it rectifies its failings.
