Independent MP Allegra Spender has been vocal about the impact of unaffordable housing on the economy, as well as a tax reform. She says fixing the housing crisis is key to helping solve the wealth inequality between younger and older generations. She says what the country needs to be looking at is housing supply, and policies, which seek to boost supply, such as the Coalition's investment in infrastructure spending, as well as the government's incentives for states to speed up the process to build housing. When it comes to housing tax breaks, she says the crisis could be solved without adjusting negative gearing or the capital gains tax discount. She believes negative gearing and capital gains tax discounts should be reviewed, but says removing negative gearing is not the "silver bullet" that it's sometimes made out to be to solve the housing crisis. Instead, she thinks swapping stamp duty for land tax will have a stronger impact on boosting home ownership. In the next Parliament, she wants a broader conversation around tax reform, "because tax is a key driver both of intergenerational inequity and a lack of productivity."
