US President Donald Trump has urged Cambodia and Thailand to end a deadly border conflict which has displaced 170,000 people.
Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai is seeking bilateral talks to end cross-border fighting, while the United Nations and Malaysia, the current chair of ASEAN, have offered to broker a ceasefire between the South East Asian neighbours.
The International Court of Justice has previously heard a case between Bangkok and Phnom Penh over the disputed Preah Vihear temple.
The University of Melbourne’s Melissa Conley Tyler says external pressure can be ‘helpful’ in resolving disputes on international law platforms.
