Germany has committed to helping Ukraine produce long-range weapons. Chancellor Merz announced the plan after talks with Ukraine's President Zelenskyy earlier today in the German capital. Merz said the weapons would be produced by Ukraine with German assistance, with the move representing what he called "a new form of military-industrial cooperation" with Kyiv. Berlin also promised some five billion euros in military support. In addition, Merz said Germany is in talks with the US about new sanctions on Russia. Both Zelenskyy and Merz said Russia had shown no appetite for peace talks.

Gaza's Health Ministry says Israeli military gunfire has killed one Palestinian and injured 48 others at a new aid distribution point. The Hamas-run ministry says the soldiers fired on thousands of people scrambling to receive aid packages. Israeli authorities say troops fired warning shots after losing control of the situation. A court has handed down a guilty verdict in one of France's largest-ever prosecutions of sexual abuse. Former surgeon Joel Le Scouarnec has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for almost 300 counts of sexually assaulting or raping people, most of them children. The 74-year-old is already in prison for a prior sexual abuse conviction. The case has shocked France and raised questions about why he wasn't caught earlier.

Russia launched massive aerial assaults on Ukraine in recent days in what they say is a "response" to escalating Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian territory. Moscow fired hundreds of drones, killing more than a dozen people and saturating Ukraine's air defenses.

This comes after US President Donald Trump tried to broker an end to Moscow's three-year invasion, and said Vladimir Putin had "gone absolutely CRAZY" and threatened Russia with sanctions over the attacks. Diplomatic efforts to end the war have accelerated in recent weeks, with Russian and Ukrainian officials holding direct talks for the first time in three years earlier this month, but the Kremlin has shown no signs of scaling back its maximalist demands.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed his regret at what he called a missed opportunity for peace following the brief talks held between delegations from Russia and Ukraine in Turkey.

Ukraine and Russia each sent back 1,000 people over the weekend in their biggest-ever prisoner exchange, while Moscow said it was preparing a document outlining its peace terms.

A court in Germany has thrown out a climate change lawsuit brought by a Peruvian farmer against the energy company RWE.

Saul Luciano Lliuya argued that the German firm has fueled greenhouse gas emissions and should pay to protect his hometown from a melting glacier. RWE has never operated in Peru and denied responsibility, arguing that climate change is a global issue. The court in Hamm in western Germany said an appeal is not possible, bringing the decade-long case to an end.
