  • Israel strikes Beirut for third time since Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire | DW News
Israeli war jets have struck targets in Beirut's southern suburbs - a stronghold of the militant group Hezbollah.
Israel says it destroyed a Hezbollah missile depot an hour after warning civilians to evacuate the densely populated district. It's the third such airstrike on the area since a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah took effect in November. Israel says Hezbollah violated that deal by storing precision-guided missiles. Lebanon's president has accused Israel of destabilizing the region and called on France and the US to pressure Israel to stop.

  • Iranian port explosion kills dozens, injures over a thousand | DW News
At least 28 people have been killed and more than a thousand injured in an explosion at Iran's biggest port, near the city of Bandar Abbas on the Persian Gulf.
Officials have linked the blast at the port of Shahid Rajaee to poorly stored chemicals - but the government says it's too soon to determine the exact cause. Local rescue crews are still working to extinguish fires at the harbor, which is one of Iran's most important maritime hubs due to its location on the Strait of Hormuz. Moscow has announced it will send additional fire fighting planes to assist local crews.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has offered his condolances to the vicitms' families.
Ali Fathollah-Nejad is director of the Center for Middle East and Global Order and joins DW from Hamburg.

  • How San Lorenzo fans in Argentina remember Pope Francis | DW News
The pope's funeral has been followed closely around the world, not least in his native Argentina. In Buenos Aires, thousands of people gathered to mourn the pontiff outside the Metropolitan Cathedral where he served as archbishop for 15 years.
Like many there, Francis was an avid football fan. From an early age his family would take him to watch San Lorenzo, a club he would follow throughout his life. After his death, the club organized a mass in his memory.

  • Kashmir: Where could the mounting tensions between India and Pakistan be heading? | DW News
Officials say Pakistani and Indian troops have exchanged fire for another night along Kashmir's Line of Control, that separates the two countries. Delhi accuses Pakistan of supporting "cross-border terrorism", after gunmen opened fire on tourists in Indian-administered territory. Islamabad denies the claims.
Pakistan says it is open to a neutral investigation into the deadly attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir. Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has rejected India's accusation that Islamabad is behind Tuesday's attack in Pahalgam, where gunmen opened fire on tourists. Sharif says Pakistan's army is prepared to defend the country's sovereignty, as many in India demand military action against Pakistan.
Travel between India and Pakistan has been halted -- except for one religious minority -- Sikh pilgrims, as the nuclear-armed neighbours find themselves caught in a dangerous escalation.
DW Correspondent Adil Bhat is in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir.
Sumit Ganguly is a Senior Fellow at the Hoover Institution at Stanford University, speaking to DW from Menlo Park, California.
