  • How scientist found signs of alien life and why they remain cautious | DW News
Scientists say they have found the strongest indications yet of the possibility of life in outer space on a planet more than 120 light years away. That's a little over 1,000,000,000,000,000 (a quadrillion) kilometers from Earth.
But not too far for the James Webb space telescope, which has detected particular gases on a planet known as K2-18b. On earth, these gases are produced by living organisms such as algae and other microbes. The discovery suggests the planet may be teeming with microbial life. But the scientists stress they haven't yet discovered actual alien life.
DW spoke to the project's lead researcher Nikku Madhusdhan from the University of Cambridge about his team's discoveries.
Astronomer and planetary scientist Sara Seager from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology also joined us to discuss research. She was sceptical that the research proved the presence of life on the planet.
Planetary physicist Raymond Pierrehumbert from the University of Oxford shared his views as well. He said that much more information was needed, pointing out that the planet's atmosphere was very different from earth and that it wasn't clear at all that there was even microbial life there.

  • Bangladesh, Pakistan resume talks after 15 years | DW News
Foreign ministry officials from Bangladesh and Pakistan have met for talks for the first time in 15 years. • 'Not our war': Rubio says US will 'move on' from Ukraine peace talks without progress | DW News
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the US will decide "in a matter of days" whether a Ukraine ceasefire deal is possible or not.
Rubio warned that the US would "move on," if a deal wasn't doable in the short term.
"The United States has been helping Ukraine over the last three years, and we want it to end, but it's not our war," Rubio said.
Rubio had just attended high-level talks hosted by France on Thursday to discuss Ukraine and its security. The meeting was the first time since President Donald Trump's inauguration that top US, Ukrainian and European officials are known to have met together to discuss an end to the war.

  • Will the EU use its 'trade bazooka' against the US? | DW News
The United States has given itself 90 days to re-shape dozens of economic relationships, including with the world's largest single market, the European Union. The two sides have been talking this week, but so far, no deal's been done. Right now the dispute is centered on goods but an escalation could see services affected, too. DW Business speaks with Sophia Busch, Assistant Director at the Atlantic Council's GeoEconomic Center about the implications for consumers on both sides of the Atlantic.

  • Behind US ruling on Google’s illegal ad tech monopoly | DW News
A US judge has ruled that the internet search engine Google is illegally dominating some online advertising markets.
The ruling found Google broke the law to build its dominance over the technology that places ads on pages across the internet. The US Justice Department and a group of states had sued Google. They argued that its monopoly in ad technology allowed the company to charge higher prices. It is the second court ruling that Google holds an illegal monopoly, after it lost another case over online searches.
