What's policy one day is postponed the next: After Liberation Day, it's Hesitation Day - the highest tariffs slapped on African nations, then slashed for a three month pause. • US-China trade war: Who will suffer most in the tariff hikes? | DW News
Donald Trump's pause on a suite of tariffs that shook global markets this week has been controversial and drawn accusations of market manipulation, but may simply be a hardball tactic to recalibrate the world economy to Washington's advantage.
Trump's reciprocal tariffs first struck after midnight on Wednesday, and sent markets plummeting. He was quick to post to his Truth Social platform after the start of morning trade, telling investors to "BE COOL! Everything is going to work out well. The USA will be bigger and better than ever before!" and, minutes later, "THIS IS A GREAT TIME TO BUY!!!."
Within hours, he'd reversed course: While the US will maintain a universal 10% levy on imports at the border, a swath of additional taxes — for some nations as high as 50% — were lifted.

The news sent diving markets suddenly soaring to the biggest single day on the S&P 500 and second-best for the Nasdaq since 2008.
Only China saw its tariffs remain in place, with Trump further increasing them.

  • US court: Student can be deported over pro-Palestinian protest| DW News
An immigration judge has ruled that Columbia University student Mahmoud Khalil is a national security risk and can be deported due to his participation in pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Khalil, a legal US resident, was the first student to be arrested as part of President Donald Trump’s crackdown on student protests in support of the people of Gaza. A day after his arrest on March 8, he was sent to a detention center in Louisiana — far from his pregnant wife in New York.

  • Germany’s incoming government vows to supercharge defense spending | DW News
Europe has taken the reins of military support for Kyiv, amid uncertainty surrounding Washington's future role. Ukraine's European allies breathed a sigh of relief on Friday when US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made a virtual appearance at talks held to coordinate military assistance to Ukraine.
Until then, it wasn't clear whether the Pentagon chief would take part at all.
"He is traveling, but was determined to join us," UK Defense Secretary John Healey said of his US counterpart, as he called the meeting of some 50 countries to order at NATO headquarters in Brussels.
The Ukraine Defense Contact Group was founded by Hegseth's predecessor, Lloyd Austin, in 2022 after the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, drawing in countries far beyond the NATO military alliance to monthly meetings where they were regularly challenged to increase their military contributions to Kyiv.
With the Trump administration now focused on getting Russia and Ukraine to the negotiating table, Friday's meeting was instead chaired by the UK and Germany.

  • Nuclear talks: A new chance for US-Iran diplomacy? | DW News
An advisor to Iran's supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said Friday that Tehran wants a "real and fair" agreement in talks with the US on its nuclear program this weekend in Oman.
Since 2018, when the US during Trump's first administration pulled out of a deal allowing Iran sanctions relief in return for scaling down uranium enrichment, the UN's nuclear watchdog has warned Tehran is getting close to producing nuclear fuel to produce a weapon. Iran insists its uranium enrichment is for civilian purposes.
Since taking office again in January, Trump has slapped new sanctions on the Islamic Republic, while calling for new talks on its curbing nuclear program.

  • How willing is the US to still support Ukraine? | DW News
European countries have pledged an additional 21-Bbillion euros of military aid for Ukraine. The promises came at a meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Brussels. The US has played a leading role in the forum since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. But that's been scaled back since President Donald Trump moved into the White House. US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth made a last-minute appearance by video link.

  • Is a two-state solution still possible? | DW News
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel's renewed military pressure in Gaza is aimed at forcing Hamas to agree to a new deal and release hostages. But many Palestinians fear the buffer zone is the first step toward an Israeli occupation.
The UN has issued a stark warning, saying Israel's actions risk destroying "the future viability of the Palestinians as a group" in Gaza.
