Negotiators from Russia and Ukraine will meet in Istanbul today for the third time in recent months. President Volodomyr Zelenskyy says that a ceasefire is not on the agenda, and the talks will instead focus on preparations of a meeting between himself and Russia's President Putin. Meanwhile, NATO allies are scrambling to find Patriot air defense systems to send to Kyiv. The American-made systems are in short supply. Germany has nine units, and says it's willing to send two of them to Kyiv - but only if they can be replaced by the US within the coming months.

Japan's Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has denied media reports that he has decided to step down. Ishiba came under pressure to resign after his party lost control of the upper house in last weekend's election. The prime minister said today that he would stay in office to ensure that a trade deal with the United States is appropriately implemented. US President Donald Trump announced a deal that lowers the 25 percent tariff on Japanese products that he threatened, down to 15 percent. Tokyo has committed to investing more than 500 billion dollars in the US and easing imports on items like cars and rice.

In southern Syria's Sweida Province, a fragile ceasefire appears to be holding after more than a week of deadly sectarian clashes between Bedouin tribes and Druze fighters. Government forces are also accused of violations, with the Syrian defense ministry promising to punish the perpetrators. In Sweida, communities caught in the crossfire are reeling from the violence. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says more than one thousand people have been killed in weeks of conflict, including attacks on civilians. And the United Nations says more than one hundred thousand people have been displaced.

DW correspondents Aya Ibrahim and Mohammed Chreyteh have visited the region to hear from those affected.

Germany's coalition government appears divided over whether to join dozens of other Western nations in condemning Israel's actions in Gaza. 28 countries, including France, Britain, Italy, Austria, and Canada signed the statement calling for an end to the war. But Germany chose to opt out. Lawmakers of the center-left Social Democratic Party (SPD), the junior coalition partner, have called on the government to support the initiative. International Development Minister Reem Alabali Radovan said she was unhappy with Germany's decision not to sign it. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has dismissed suggestions of a rift within the coalition.
