In his first parliamentary address on July 26, South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said the country's economy is in a "desperate" situation, stressing the need to tackle persistent recession fears and growing economic inequality. Taking office just three weeks ago, his election follows a period of political instability triggered by his predecessor's failed attempt to impose martial law.
What major challenges lie ahead for the new administration? And how will President Lee navigate relations with key neighbors and allies?
To explore these issues, we spoke with Professor Moon Chung-in of Yonsei University, former special advisor to the South Korean president on unification, diplomacy and security, and vice chairman of the Asia-Pacific Leadership Network for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament.
