On April 18, 1942, the U.S. launched the Doolittle Raid in retaliation to the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. American pilots taking part in the operation crash-landed in Quzhou, China, where they were rescued by local villagers. Even in their later years, the Doolittle Raiders never forgot the bond forged in Quzhou. In 2008, James, son of airman William Bower, who piloted Bomber No. 12, reached out to Quzhou researcher Zheng Weiyong on behalf of his elderly father, who wished to have a piece of his downed aircraft as a keepsake. So it was Zheng that eventually recovered a fragment of the plane and dispatched it to the U.S. – a heartfelt act of kindness and a legacy of friendship!

Israel's security cabinet has approved a plan to take over Gaza City, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said in a statement on Friday. Israel intended to take control of all of Gaza to "assure our security, remove Hamas there, enable the population to be free of Gaza," Netanyahu said on Thursday in an interview with Fox News ahead of the security cabinet meeting.

In response, Hamas said in a statement that it considers Netanyahu's statements to represent "a clear reversal of the course of negotiations and reveal the true motives behind his withdrawal from the final round."

A brush fire north of Los Angeles ignited on Thursday, spreading rapidly to more than 4.1 square kilometers within three hours. About 4,200 residents and 1,400 structures in Los Angeles County are under evacuation orders, with another 12,500 residents under evacuation warnings.

This blaze follows the massive Gifford Fire in Central California, now the largest wildfire in the state this year. It has burned about 399 square kilometers, is 15 percent contained, and has injured at least four people.

Hundreds of protesters rallied outside the prime minister's office in Jerusalem on August 7, calling for an end to the Gaza offensive and the release of hostages, as Israel's security cabinet met to discuss a possible ground takeover of the territory.

In an interview before the meeting, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israel intends to "remove Hamas" and hand Gaza to a civilian administration backed by Arab partners. More than 61,100 people have been killed in Gaza since the conflict began in October 2023, according to Palestinian authorities, and much of the enclave has been left in ruins.
