President Donald Trump said Pete Hegseth is “doing a great job” despite what appear to be attacks from “disgruntled employees,” as the defense secretary is buffeted by staff dismissals, a leak investigation and a report that he shared sensitive military attack plans in a second unsecured chat group.

“Ask the Houthis how much dysfunction there is,” Trump told reporters Monday during the annual Easter Egg roll on the White House lawn, referring to the military’s attacks on Houthi militants in Yemen.

The president’s support came after John Ullyot, who resigned last week after serving briefly as Pentagon spokesman, said the Defense Department has been overwhelmed by staff drama and turnover in the initial months of the second Trump administration. He called it a “full-blown meltdown” that could cost the defense secretary his job.

The criticism from Ullyot followed statements by three top Defense Department officials who were reportedly fired amid an inquiry into leaks. They said they weren’t told what they were being investigated for or if there was even a leak probe underway.

Global leaders paid tribute and sought to associate themselves with the legacy of the late Pope Francis, highlighting his role in key global conflicts at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions.

US Vice President JD Vance, a key ally in Donald Trump’s push to disrupt the global order, mentioned a homily made by the late pope in 2020, when he called on people to keep faith in their leader amid the “storm.” Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who’s clashed with the more conservative leadership of the church in Madrid, highlighted the pope’s commitment to social justice. The UK’s center-left prime minister, Keir Starmer, said Francis has been a “pope for the poor.”

Pope Francis, 88, died in Rome on Monday morning. He’d been hospitalized for about five weeks with severe pneumonia and left hospital in March.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, a long-time ally of the late pontiff, said the news saddened her deeply, calling him a “great man and a great shepherd.” Meloni made history last year when she invited the late pope to the Group of Seven summit in southern Italy, where he warned of the dangers of unregulated artificial intelligence.

Pope Francis, who encouraged Catholics to embrace a more compassionate view on many issues but found it difficult to close the book on past abuses by clergy, has died. He was 88.

Francis passed away at 7:35 a.m. Monday in Rome, the Vatican said in a statement. He had been hospitalized in Rome in mid-February with bronchitis, which progressed to pneumonia in both lungs — the last in a litany of respiratory and other medical challenges he had faced. On Sunday, he had met with US Vice President JD Vance.

President Donald Trump says he signed an executive order putting US flags at half mast in recognition of the passing of Pope Francis.

"He was a good man," Trump said of the pope, who died on Monday. "He loved the world and it's an honor to do that."

President Donald Trump is betting that a 25% tariff on imports of vehicles and automotive parts will bring more manufacturing to US shores.

But realizing that ambition rests on a major overhaul of the globally integrated supply chains the auto industry has spent decades fine-tuning. Cars aren’t single-origin products like coffee. They’re made up of tens of thousands of components — from the transmission to the alternators to individual springs — that are sourced from all over the world.

Shifting production to the US of more, let alone all, of those parts would be an expensive transition for carmakers. American consumers would likely feel the pain too, as tariffs are widely expected to push up vehicle prices by thousands of dollars.

That prospect could spur another tariff climbdown from Trump, who said in mid-April that he’s “looking at something to help car companies” to give them more time to switch their supply chains and manufacturing to the US. He didn’t specify what form that relief could take — be it a blanket pause, carve-outs or a lowering of the duties — or how long it would remain in place.

President Donald Trump said during a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni that he expects to reach a trade deal with the European Union, but indicated he is in no hurry to finalize an agreement to reduce tariffs.

“There’ll be a trade deal,” Trump said Thursday, adding “I fully expect it, but it’ll be a fair deal.”

The president offered no time line for when he expected the first of the agreements to be finalized with trading partners seeking to avoid high tariffs, saying only that they would happen “at a certain point” and insisting that other nations would need to make concessions.

“We’re in no rush,” Trump added. “We are going to have very little problem making a deal with Europe or anyone else.”

President Donald Trump said he could force out Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, rebuking the notion that the US central bank is independent, and vented frustration that monetary policymakers had not recently cut interest rates.

“If I ask him to, he’ll be out of there,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office Thursday when asked about an earlier social media post blasting the Fed chair as being too slow to lower rates. “I’m not happy with him. I let him know it.”

The US president in the post said that “Powell’s termination cannot come fast enough!” A Fed spokesperson had declined to comment on Trump’s earlier remark.

At the White House, Trump didn’t respond to a follow-up question from a reporter about whether he was trying to remove the central bank chief. He also said Powell, who he nominated to take the Fed’s helm during his first term, has been “terrible.” There’s “essentially no inflation,” and if the Fed cut its benchmark, then borrowing costs would be lower also, he said.

The US is prepared to recognize Russian control of the Ukrainian region of Crimea as part of a broader peace agreement between Moscow and Kyiv, according to people familiar with the matter.

The potential concession is the latest signal that President Donald Trump is eager to cement a ceasefire deal, and comes as he and Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested on Friday that the administration is prepared to move on from its peace-brokering efforts unless progress is made quickly.

Crimea was taken by the Kremlin in 2014 following an invasion and subsequent referendum held under occupation, and the international community has resisted recognizing the peninsula as Russian to avoid legitimizing the illegal annexation.

Doing so risks undermining international laws and treaties prohibiting the taking of land through use of force. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has repeatedly said he will not cede territory to Moscow.

But the move would be a boon for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has long sought international recognition of Russian sovereignty in Crimea. Putin so far has refused to agree to Trump’s proposal for a broad peace deal.
