Yet three desperados succeeded in piloting this primitive contraption on a near-suicidal 28-day voyage from South America’s coca fields to Spain’s wild Galician coast.

Crammed into the hold behind the sub’s steering wheel on that 4,000-mile journey was its precious cargo — three tonnes of the finest Colombian cocaine, worth more than £120million.

GERMAN and Portuguese cops have started the second day of their hunt for missing British toddler Madeleine McCann.

On Tuesday, officers concentrated their efforts on a derelict property, located in southern Portugal just a few miles from Praia da Luz.

The search is part of a fresh operation to uncover evidence that could implicate Christian Brueckner, the convicted sex offender named as the prime suspect in the case.

Teams will be looking where trenches were dug near the resort at the time of Madeleine's disappearance, at wells, ruins and water tanks, with plans to examine 21 pieces of land.
