  • ‘Democracy is a verb’: Timothy Snyder on why the fight begins with you
Historian Timothy Snyder reminds us that the fight for democracy has always begun with ordinary Americans—through civil disobedience, economic pressure, and creative acts of resistance. “Democracy is not a noun; democracy is a verb,” he says. If you think democracy is something outside of yourself, it’s already been defeated. Snyder stresses that resistance isn’t one-size-fits-all. It ranges from small, everyday actions to bigger, riskier actions. “The crucial thing is to do something,” he says. “We also have to recognize that it’s not on any one of us to solve the whole thing. Each of us does a little bit—and together, that changes the whole landscape.”

  • Ben Rhodes: Situation in Gaza ‘unimaginably worse than we can even tell from the outside’
As attempts are made for a new ceasefire in Gaza and Israel is garnering criticism from nations not normally critical, former Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes says the humanitarian situation has been “materially worse there over the last few weeks than it has been since October 7th.” Netanyahu has "prioritized the control and bombardment of Gaza over any diplomacy,” says Rhodes. But while the Trump administration shows signs of frustration with Netanyahu, "they're not withholding any assistance...It's not like the U.S. is using its real leverage here.”

  • ‘Billion dollar border industrial complex’ blossoms under Trump’s deportation program
Private incarceration companies are playing a huge role in Trump’s deportation plans. The biggest detention centers in the country are run by private companies – many of which have tried to curry favor with the Trump Administration by donating to Republican campaigns or Trump’s inaugural committee. NYU Law Professor Rachel Barkow says the dynamics mimic the larger prison industrial complex. Co-creator, Migration and Technology Monitor Petra Molnar says some tracking apps developed by these companies can be efficient, “But right now, what technology is doing is actually replicating racism, discrimination, carceral logic.”
