  • Can Dems podcast their way out of 2024 loss?
Democrats are hoping to find 'the next Joe Rogan' to reconnect with young voters but will that help? Jason Selvig says the bigger issue is the party needs to find younger leaders: "If you are 24 years old right now... your only idea of Democrats is Joe Biden."

  • ‘There are seeds of optimism’: Yale prof. reflects on the 5th anniversary of George Floyd’s death
When it comes to improving the relationship between people of color and law enforcement “there are seeds of optimism but only if we’re interested in building over the long term,” says Phillip Attiba Solomon, professor of African American Studies at Yale University. Retired Montgomery police captain Sonia Pruitt agreed but with cautious optimism. “The question becomes, can you reform something that’s working as it was designed to do,” she said. “And can we get people to come inside of these departments? Because you can only disrupt a system if you have someone on the inside.”

  • Velshi: A cell phone camera can’t be the only defense against police brutality
On May 25th, 2020, the Minneapolis Police Department released a statement saying “Man Dies After Medical Incident During Police Interaction”. The man in question was George Floyd and he was murdered by Officer Derek Chauvin. That initial police statement was false. And the truth only came out because of a 17-year-old with a cell phone camera. But, it should not be the work of a civilian to hold law enforcement to account. A cell phone with a camera should not be the only defense against police brutality.

  • Judge Luttig: Trump’s war the judiciary could see 'catastrophic end'
The Trump administration’s war on the rule of law is most evident in its relentless attacks on American judges who rule against the former president’s policies. Attorney General Pam Bondi recently escalated that rhetoric, calling these judges “deranged”—a remark that former federal judge J. Michael Luttig found especially alarming. “The judges are not deranged, Pam Bondi. They are simply enforcing their oath to the Constitution of the United States—the same oath that you, Madam Attorney General, took yourself.” In this timely and urgent interview, the former federal judge warns, “I don’t know where this ends... but it appears that, in this moment, the President intends to prosecute this war against the federal judiciary–and the rule of law– to its catastrophic end.”

  • Trump’s alarming escalation in rhetoric against the judiciary
Donald Trump’s war on the judiciary and the rule of law is no longer theoretical, following the FBI’s arrest of Milwaukee County Judge Hannah Dugan—an alarming new escalation in his assault on the judicial branch. From pardoning Jan. 6 rioters to threatening federal judges, and now the arrest of a sitting jurist, the Trump administration has made clear it sees the independent judiciary not as a coequal branch, but as an adversary to be subdued. Congressional Republicans are aiding this effort by pushing legislation designed to strip the courts of key powers. The message to legal professionals nationwide is clear: toe the line—or become a target.

  • ‘Slot machine justice:’ The Supreme Court’s reliance on the emergency docket
In recent years, the Supreme Court has overloaded its “shadow docket” with controversial cases that do not receive the same scrutiny and legal process as a traditional case in front of the court. NYU Law professor Melissa Murray says the courts’ use of the shadow docket has “raised a lot of questions about transparency.” Slate Senior Editor Dahlia Lithwick says that at a time when the Supreme Court struggles with legitimacy, the shadow docket is “the worst possible way to say [the Supreme Court] is a serious entity.”

  • How a case makes it to the Supreme Court
The Supreme Court is issuing full rulings, deadlocked rulings, one-sentence rulings, and everything in between. It’s relying heavily on its “emergency docket” to make decisions on President Trump’s most controversial policies. We break down the various types of Supreme Court rulings, and what they all mean.

  • ‘Elections do not change the Constitution’: Judges pump brakes on Trump’s disregard for due process
For weeks, the administration has battled over a judge’s order to facilitate the return of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who the administration admitted was mistakenly removed to a notorious Salvadorian prison despite an immigration judge’s ruling that should have protected him from being deported there. And this week, a federal judge ruled the Trump administration must facilitate the return of another wrongly deported man.

  • JD Vance knows better: Former DOJ prosecutor slams Vance’s attempt to stymie judicial review
This week alone, numerous judges called out the illegality of Trump’s actions, particularly for his immigration agenda. Former federal prosecutor Joyce Vance joins “The Weekend” to discuss JD Vance’s suggestion that the Supreme Court should not check the constitutionality of Trump’s actions, just because he promised mass deportations on the campaign trail.
