It is in places like Dongguan in southern China where Donald Trump’s tariffs are hitting the hardest.
The city is a hub for tech and industrial manufacturing, and it is one of many cities in Guangdong province which helped build and maintain China’s reputation as the factory of the world.
One of the things that strikes you most when you visit the industrial heartlands of China, is not just the sheer number of factories dedicated to the country’s export industry, it’s the scale of the workforce required to support it.
Next to, or even within most of the production sites in Dongguan, there are huge dormitories to house the thousands of workers making electronics, plastics and machinery for the rest of the world.
In the short term it is hard to see anywhere replicating the output of China - and not just in terms of the size, in terms of skill and supply chains too.
