Palestinians in Gaza had gathered along the Rashid coastal road, hoping to receive food from trucks possibly entering through the Zikim crossing. Instead, many returned empty-handed, or did not return at all.

Injured people were seen loaded onto car roofs, while other desperate people walked miles back from the Zikim area, but only some were clutching sacks of flour.

“My husband is traveling for treatment, and I have five children. We are dying of hunger,” said Iman Shabat, a displaced woman. “There is shooting and death, but I have to come because my children are hungry.”

Overnight, an Israeli strike hit crowds of Palestinians waiting for aid near the Nabulsi roundabout in Gaza City, killing at least eight people and wounding 118 others, according to hospitals and the Palestinian Red Crescent.

Syria reels from a new round of sectarian violence in the south, which again has threatened to upend the country’s fragile recovery from nearly 14 years of civil war.

Footage obtained by AP shows dozens of bodies lying on the ground at Sweida National Hospital following days of deadly clashes between Druze and Bedouins and later with Syrian Security Forces in the city.

The head of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, Mohammed Hazem Baqleh, told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the situation in the city of Sweida was grim, particularly in the main hospital, where some 300 bodies piled up during the clashes.

The city had been almost entirely cut off from supplies during the almost two-week fighting.

A Red Crescent team worked with the hospital's forensics to document the dead and prepare them for burial, he said.

Baqleh said that with electricity and water largely cut off during the fighting, "there is a significant shortage of materials and a shortage of human resources” in the hospital.

The Red Crescent brought in one aid convoy on Sunday, the first to enter the city since the violence started, and is preparing to send another on Wednesday carrying some 66 tons of flour, along with other foodstuffs, fuel and medical items, Baqleh said.

The group was registering names of civilians who want to leave the city to give them safe passage out, he said.

Security forces were manning checkpoints on the roads leading into Sweida city Tuesday and prevented groups of Bedouin fighters from approaching the city, AP photographers at the scene said.

Late in the evening, state-run news agency SANA reported that a convoy of families was evacuated from Sweida escorted by Syrian Red Crescent and Syrian Civil Defence teams.

Evacuation of Bedouin families from Druze-majority areas has already begun during the weekend. Syrian state media on Sunday said the government had coordinated with officials in Sweida to bring buses to evacuate some 1,500 Bedouins. Many of them are now staying in crowded shelters in neighboring Daraa province.

Some worried that the displacement for those who leave will become permanent, a familiar scenario from the days of Syria's civil war.

Sweida's provincial governor, Mustafa al-Bakour, reiterated promises that the displacement will not be long term.

The Human Rights Watch report said that all parties in the conflict had reportedly committed “serious abuses” and that the violence had also “ignited sectarian hate speech and the risk of reprisals against Druze communities across the country.”

A fire that killed 10 people at a Massachusetts assisted-living facility was unintentionally caused either by someone smoking or an electrical issue with an oxygen machine, investigators said Tuesday.

The state’s deadliest blaze in more than four decades has highlighted the lack of regulations governing assisted-living facilities that often care for low-income or disabled residents.

The state fire marshal, Jon Davine, said the presence of medical oxygen contributed to the spread of the July 13 fire at Gabriel House in Fall River. The blaze left some residents of hanging out windows of the three-story building screaming for help.

Investigators found no signs that electrical outlets, lights, heaters or cooking appliances sparked the fire, said Thomas Quinn, the district attorney for Bristol County.

“The Butter Cow is a tradition of the state fair, and Ohio's dairy farmers are so proud to be a part of that tradition,” Jenny Crabtree of the American Dairy Association said.

A team of six sculptors spent about 400 hours to built the buttery sculptures, and 335 of those hours were spent inside the cooler they’re stored in which sits at 46 degrees Fahrenheit, according to Crabtree.

“Seeing how many people come in here and see it, I don't think you can help but like see how important it is there and for the dairy farmers and association and just the tradition of it,” one of the sculptors Tammy Buerk said.

The butter was donated in part by Dairy Farmers of America and will be recycled after the completion of the fair, according to a release.

The state fair runs from July 23 through August 3.

An explosion and smoke could be seen from the Gaza Strip late on Tuesday, as Israel continued its offensive.

it came as Israeli strikes killed at least 25 people across Gaza on Tuesday, according to local health officials.

One strike hit tents sheltering displaced people in the built-up seaside Shati refugee camp in Gaza City, killing at least 12 people, according to Shifa Hospital, which received the casualties. The Israeli military said that it wasn't aware of such a strike by its forces.

The dead included three women and three children, hospital director Dr. Mohamed Abu Selmiya told The Associated Press. Thirty-eight other Palestinians were wounded, he said.

An overnight strike that hit crowds of Palestinians waiting for aid trucks in Gaza City killed eight, hospitals said. At least 118 were wounded, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.

The Israeli military had no immediate comment on that strike. Israel blames the deaths of Palestinian civilians on Hamas, because the militants operate in densely populated areas.

Israel renewed its offensive in March with a surprise bombardment after ending an earlier ceasefire. Talks on another truce have dragged on for weeks despite pressure from U.S. President Donald Trump.

Hamas-led militants abducted 251 people in the Oct. 7 attack, and killed around 1,200 people. Fewer than half of the 50 hostages still in Gaza are believed to be alive.

More than 59,000 Palestinians have been killed during the war, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Its count doesn't distinguish between militants and civilians, but the ministry says that more than half of the dead are women and children. The U.N. and other international organizations see it as the most reliable source of data on casualties.

"Investigators determined that the Gabriel House fire began in a resident's room located on the left side of the second floor of the structure. As the District Attorney said, they found no evidence of an intentionally set fire in this room. They found no signs that cooking, lighting, heating, electrical outlets or other appliances contributed to the ignition of this fire. They found no candles, incense or related items. They did locate the damaged remains of a battery powered scooter. We believe the damage was product of the fire rather than the cause. Investigators also identified an oxygen concentrator and numerous smoking materials in the room. Tragically, the occupant was among those who lost their lives on July 13th, and we could not speak to that resident to get an account of the fire and its earliest stages. As a result, the available evidence left them with two possible causes. One was an electrical or mechanical failure involving the oxygen concentrator. The other was improper use or disposal of smoking materials."

"Investigators believe the presence of medical oxygen played a significant role in the fire's rapid spread, and the ensuing tragedy. Oxygen is a necessary component of any fire, and it was present in the area of origin and other locations at Gabriel House."

STORYLINE:

A fire that killed 10 people at a Massachusetts assisted-living facility was unintentionally caused either by someone smoking or an electrical issue with an oxygen machine, investigators said Tuesday.

The state’s deadliest blaze in more than four decades has highlighted the lack of regulations governing assisted-living facilities that often care for low-income or disabled residents.

The state fire marshal, Jon Davine, said the presence of medical oxygen contributed to the spread of the July 13 fire at Gabriel House in Fall River. The blaze left some residents of hanging out windows of the three-story building screaming for help.
