STORYLINE:

Hundreds of members of the Druze community in the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights and Druze villages in northern Israel gathered along the border fence with Syria, trying to enter the country as clashes between government forces and Syria's Druze factions intensify.

Meanwhile, hundreds of the Syrian Druze community gathered on the other side of the fence, though it was not immediately clear if they were demonstrating or trying to cross the border.

The Israeli military said dozens have tried to cross into Israel.

The protesters shouted slogans in support of the Druze-majority area of Sweida.

Tensions intensified when several Syrian Druze protesters stood atop a tractor waving Druze flags and Israeli troops responded by throwing tear gas, forcing them to retreat.

Clashes raged in the southern Syrian city of Sweida on Wednesday after a ceasefire between government forces and Druze armed groups collapsed and as Israel threatened to escalate its involvement, saying it's in support of the Druze religious minority.

The latest escalation in Syria began with tit-for-tat kidnappings and attacks between local Sunni Bedouin tribes and Druze armed factions in the southern province.

Government forces that intervened to restore order then clashed with the Druze.

In Israel, the Druze are seen as a loyal minority and often serve in the military.

In Syria, the Druze have been divided over how to deal with the country's new leaders, with some advocating for integrating into the new system while others have remained suspicious of the authorities in Damascus and pushed for an autonomous Druze region.

The Druze religious sect began as a 10th-century offshoot of Ismailism, a branch of Shiite Islam.

More than half of the roughly 1 million Druze worldwide live in Syria.

Most of the other Druze live in Lebanon and Israel, including in the Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Mideast War and annexed in 1981.

STORYLINE:

Bodies were brought to a hospital in Gaza City after the latest Israeli strikes on the area killed 22 people, including 11 children and three women, according to health officials.

Relatives mourned their loved ones inside the hospital's morgue before prayers were held for the dead outside.

Elsewhere, 19 people were killed in Israeli strikes on Khan Younis, hospital officials said.

The Israeli military said it had struck more than 120 targets in the past 24 hours across the Gaza Strip.

It also announced the opening of a new corridor — the fourth — that bisects Khan Younis, where Israeli troops have seized land in what they said is a pressure tactic against Hamas.

In the past, these narrow strips of land have been a serious hurdle during ceasefire negotiations, as Israel has said it wants to maintain military presence in them.

Negotiations in the Qatari capital between Israel and Hamas are at a standstill, after 21 months of war, which began with the militants' cross-border attack on October 7, 2023.

That day, militants killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted 251 people, most of whom have since been released in ceasefire agreements or other deals.

Fifty hostages are still being held, less than half of them believed to be alive.

Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed over 58,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which has said women and children make up more than half of the dead.

It does not distinguish between civilians and militants in its tally.

The ministry is part of the Hamas-run government. The United Nations and other international organizations consider its figures to be the most reliable count of war casualties.

STORYLINE:

Italy goes to the polls on May 13th and recent opinion polls put former prime minister and media-magnate Silvio Berlusconi well in the lead.

During the last two weeks the campaign has been marred by a series of bomb threats and one explosion which damaged a private research institute in Rome.

No arrests have been made and both main parties have been slinging mud at each other over allegations of involvement in terror.

On Thursday Mr. Berlusconi said he was 'always blamed' by the left for political violence.

Earlier in the week the conservative leader scrambled to control damage to his image after he linked a terrorist assassination to the center-left ruling coalition.

The bitter controversy was the latest in an already tough war of words between the two coalitions.

It started Saturday when Berlusconi claimed the 1999 shooting death of government aide Massimo D'Antona was a "settling of accounts within the left."

Berlusconi tried to clarify his remark, saying he was talking about organizations "outside the parliamentary left and the unions."

But it still landed like a bombshell, in part because it came just a day after Berlusconi claimed he was getting so many threats he was canceling his campaign rallies.

Despite the threats, Berlusconi was back at the hustings on Thursday, meeting supporters in an open air market in Rome.

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi met Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday morning for talks in Moscow.

Berlusconi arrived late on Wednesday for a hastily arranged, one-day working visit.

Putin thanked Berlusconi for his work to improve relations between the two countries and the two leaders discussed cooperation in the international anti-terrorist campaign.

They are also expected to talk about relations between Russia and the European Union and Russia and NATO.

Russian newspapers reported on Thursday that Berlusconi's visit reflected Moscow's cultivation of stronger relations with the European Union.

Berlusconi is scheduled to come to Moscow again on an official visit next year.

Italy's lower house of parliament on Wednesday moved closer to passing an immunity bill that will suspend Premier Silvio Berlusconi's bribery trial just as it was nearing a verdict.

In early evening, the Chamber of Deputies approved the first article of the bill, which would result in suspending the trial for Berlusconi while he is in office.

Debate on several other articles of the bill was continuing, and the entire legislation was expected to pass later on Wednesday night.

Earlier this month, the Senate gave its approval to the bill, which spares the top five public officials from prosecution while in office.

President Carlo Azeglio Ciampi is expected to sign the bill into law soon, meaning the case against Berlusconi will likely be suspended before Italy takes over the high-profile European Union presidency July 1.

Berlusconi's centre-right allies in parliament championed the legislation after the premier's lawyers tried and failed to have the three-year-old trial delayed or moved from Milan.

His allies also wanted to avoid the embarrassment of a possible conviction during Italy's six-month rotating term at the helm of the EU.

After an absence of over twenty years, the World Bank resumed operations in Afghanistan on Wednesday, committing to help rebuild and develop the devastated country.

World Bank president, James Wolfensohn, met with the country's interim leader, Hamid Karzai in the capital, Kabul, during a one-day visit.

He also visited a community centre in a poor area of Kabul.

Wolfensohn made the trip to the Afghan capital while on a five-day visit to neighbouring Pakistan.

The World Bank has not been working in Afghanistan since the country was invaded by the former Soviet Union in 1979.

STORYLINE:

Italians haven't forgotten the American soldiers who fought in this peninsula 60 years ago to expel the Nazis.

But fresher still is bitterness over the Iraq war, with massive protests planned for Friday's visit of U-S President George W. Bush.

Bush, visiting Rome to mark the 60th anniversary of its liberation by the Allies, will get a taste of the mixed emotions here.

In private meetings, he will be embraced by his strong ally, Premier Silvio Berlusconi; on the streets, thousands of furious demonstrators will gather.

Most Italians opposed the Iraq war.

Berlusconi, however, sent 3,000 troops to help rebuild Iraq after Saddam Hussein's ouster.

The premier said on Thursday that he was worried about the possibility of violence and appealed to his fellow countrymen not to forget their debt to America.

Ties between America and Italy are long and strong.

Rome was liberated from Nazi occupation on June 4, 1944, after an appalling period that included deportations of Jews to death camps and massacres of civilians.

Dozens of desperate, displaced Palestinians gathered Tuesday in Gaza City to receive pre-cooked lentil soup meals distributed by a charity kitchen.

Charity kitchens have been trying to meet people’s needs amid harrowing conditions, but there isn’t enough food to fill the pots and pans of thousands of hungry people.

"Everyone charges (toward the distribution point). Some people manage to get food, but others don't," said Eitaf Hamouda, speaking to the Associated Press after receiving a pot of lentil soup.

"Until now, the children haven't had breakfast," she added.

Malnutrition rates among children in the Gaza Strip have doubled since Israel sharply restricted the entry of food in March, the U.N. said Tuesday.

Hunger has been rising among Gaza’s more than 2 million Palestinians since Israel broke a ceasefire in March to resume the war and banned all food and other supplies from entering Gaza, saying it aimed to pressure Hamas to release hostages.

It slightly eased the blockade in late May, allowing in a trickle of aid.

UNRWA, the main U.N. agency caring for Palestinians in Gaza, said it had screened nearly 16,000 children under age 5 at its clinics in June and found 10.2% of them were acutely malnourished.

By comparison, in March, 5.5% of the nearly 15,000 children it screened were malnourished.

Gaza’s more than 2 million Palestinians are living through a catastrophic humanitarian crisis.

Since Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, setting off the 21-month war, Israel has bombarded and laid siege to the strip, leaving many teetering on the edge of famine, according to food security experts.
