STORYLINE:

Officials are keeping a wary eye on river levels as some crews resume the search for people still missing after catastrophic flooding pummeled Texas this month.

Officials on Monday also made plans to drain reservoirs as they searched for victims.

The July Fourth floods killed at least 132 people.

Some rescue efforts along the Guadalupe River resumed on Monday after being halted a day earlier due to a new round of heavy rain.

In Kerrville, Greg Adkins wades through the wreckage of his home, still processing the destruction caused by the recent Texas floods. But rather than dwell on the loss, he’s focused on the outpouring of support.

“It doesn't really matter how I feel, Our forefathers faced worse, Adkins said., adding that they didn't have the tools, trucks, or volunteers available now.

"Who am I to complain?”

Volunteers have arrived in the area, helping residents clear debris, deliver food, and rebuild homes.

“So many people are helping, bringing food, tools, brooms, squeegees, everything we need to fix these houses,” he said.

Across Kerrville, that same spirit of generosity continues to shine, as volunteers and neighbors work together to recover.

State officials have said 101 people remain missing, a significant drop from the more than 160 people officials previously said were unaccounted for in Kerr County alone.

China's economy slowed in the last quarter as President Donald Trump’s trade war escalated, but it still expanded at a robust 5.2% pace, the government said Tuesday.

That compares with 5.4% annual growth in January-March. The government said Tuesday that in quarterly terms, the world’s second largest economy expanded by 1.1%.

In the first half of the year, the Chinese economy grew at a 5.3% annual pace, Sheng Laiyun, deputy director of the National Bureau of Statistics, said at a briefing on Tuesday.

Sheng said consumption is still the major driver of GDP growth in the months from April to June while exports contributes to 23% of the GDP growth.

On Monday, China reported that its exports accelerated in June, rising 5.8% from a year earlier, up from a 4.8% increase in May.

A reprieve on painfully high tariffs on Chinese exports to the United States prompted a rush of orders by companies and consumers as the two sides resumed trade talks.

Chinese companies also have expanded exports to and offshore manufacturing in other countries, helping to offset the impact of higher tariffs imposed by the Trump administration.

Chinese leaders have set a growth target of 5% for this year, in line with last year's growth. A resumption of U.S. tariffs of up to 245% if Washington and Beijing fail to meet an Aug. 12 deadline for a new trade deal could derail the recovery in exports, a major driver of growth and employment.

Syria's Interior Ministry said Monday more than 30 people have died and nearly 100 others have been injured in fighting in the country's Sweida province.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a U.K.-based war monitor, reported at least 89 dead, including two children, two women and 14 members of the security forces.

The clashes in Syria initially broke out between armed groups from the Druze and Sunni Bedouin clans, the observatory said, with some members of the government security forces “actively participating” in support of the Bedouins.

Syria's Interior Ministry on Monday stressed that fighting was not related to sectarian violence.

"These clashes are fundamentally not sectarian in nature, nor rooted in any sectarian conflict. The Syrian state is fully committed to maintaining an impartial stance toward all segments of Syrian society," said spokesperson Noureddine al-Baba.

Israel’s army on Monday said it struck military tanks in southern Syria in response.

Israel has previously threatened to intervene in Syria in defense of the Druze religious minority.

Over half of the roughly 1 million Druze worldwide live in Syria.

Most other Druze live in Lebanon and Israel, including in the Golan Heights, which Israel captured from Syria in the 1967 Mideast War and annexed in 1981.

The Druze religious sect is a minority group that began as a 10th-century offshoot of Ismailism, a branch of Shiite Islam.

In Syria, they largely live in the southern Sweida province and some suburbs of Damascus, mainly in Jaramana and Ashrafiyat Sahnaya to the south.

Since Assad’s fall, different Druze factions have been at odds over whether to integrate with the new government and armed forces.

A wildfire that tore through a historic Grand Canyon lodge and raged out of control Monday had been allowed to burn for days before erupting over the weekend, raising scrutiny over the National Park Service’s decision not to aggressively attack the fire right away.

The wildfire along the canyon's more isolated North Rim, where most visitors don't venture, was burning quickly with no containment, fire officials said. No injuries had been reported, but more than 70 structures were lost, including a visitors center and several cabins.

At first, the fire didn’t raise alarms after igniting from a lightning strike on July 4. Four days later, the Park Service said the fire was being allowed to burn to benefit the land and fire crews were keeping close watch.

“There are no threats to infrastructure or public safety at this time,” the park said on Facebook.

Then three days later, on Friday, fire officials and the park service sent out warnings to “evacuate immediately” as the fire grew by nearly eight times within a day to more than 1.4 square miles (3.6 square kilometers).

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs called for a federal investigation into the park service’s handling of the fire.

“The federal government chose to manage that fire as a controlled burn during the driest, hottest part of the Arizona summer," the governor said in a social media post Sunday.

She will be meeting with leadership in the U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Department of the Interior soon to learn more about the decisions made in managing the wildfire, Hobbs' spokesperson Christian Slater said in an email.

It's a long way from Feb. 16, 1968, when Sen. Rankin Fite made the nation's very first 911 call in Haleyville, Alabama, on a bright red, rotary-style landline telephone. That call came just 35 days after AT&T announced plans to use 911 as a nationwide emergency number.

I had another guy that's a remediation, restoration expert out of North Texas up north of Dallas. He drove all the way down with his vans and about eight guys. And they did more work. STORYLINE:

A wildfire destroyed a historic Grand Canyon lodge and is continuing to spread out of control Monday after it had been allowed to burn for days.

Now the National Park Service’s decision not to aggressively attack the fire right away is coming under scrutiny.

So far the, fire has leveled the historic Grand Canyon Lodge on the North Rim along with over 70 structures, including cabins and a visitor center.

The fire began with a lightning strike on July 4 and intensified over the weekend because of high winds and dry conditions.

Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs has called for a federal investigation into the Park Service's handling of the fire.

Across the West, about three dozen fires were burning uncontained and another 80 fires were being managed to clear out vegetation that has clogged the landscape, according to the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho.

So far this year, nearly 2.5 million acres have burned. That’s slightly below the 10-year average, the center said Monday.

A wildfire burning in southwestern Colorado closed Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park and forced evacuations nearby. It had burned about 5.7 square miles (14.8 square kilometers) as of Monday. The fire was started by lightning Thursday on the park's south rim, a dramatic, deep gorge carved by the Gunnison River.

The White Sage Fire also grew significantly over the past day, now having charred 77 square miles (199 square kilometers) of terrain with no containment. Officials reported progress in battling the fire but evacuations.

The Grand Canyon Lodge, known for its huge ponderosa beams, massive limestone facade and a bronze statue of a donkey named “Brighty the Burro,” was perched on the edge of the North Rim and offered sweeping views of the canyon.

An original lodge burned down from a kitchen fire in 1932, four years after construction was completed, according to the Grand Canyon Historical Society. The redesigned lodge using the original stonework opened in 1937.

"It wasn't like we didn't have people around. We have a massive amount of support, which is so important with cancer, with any illness. But we had spent so much time alone with ourselves. We didn't know what it would be like to have how much we needed people in our home. I think it was the first day that we told them that we loved them. And I also want to say I'm sure many of you know that documentaries typically typically take, you know, much longer than a year. It took a year to make this film. And I never expected to live to see it. And so, I know, and they've never said this to me, but it is my feeling that they completed this at like a rapid pace, like this whole group of their team in the front her so that I would be able to see it." STORYLINE:

Andrea Gibson, a celebrated poet and performance artist who through their verse explored gender identity, politics and their 4-year battle with terminal ovarian cancer, died Monday at age 49.

Gibson's death was announced on social media by their wife, Megan Falley. Gibson and Falley are the main subjects of the documentary “Come See Me in the Good Light,” winner of the Festival Favorite Award this year at the Sundance Film Festival and scheduled to air this fall on Apple TV+.

“Andrea Gibson died in their home (in Boulder, Colorado) surrounded by their wife, Meg, four ex-girlfriends, their mother and father, dozens of friends, and their three beloved dogs,” Monday's announcement reads in part.

The film — exploring the couple’s enduring love as Gibson battles cancer — is directed by Ryan White and includes an original song written by Gibson, Sara Bareilles and Brandi Carlile. During a screening at Sundance in January that left much of the audience in tears, Gibson said they didn't expect to live long enough to see the documentary.
