STORYLINE:

French President Emmanuel Macron met with the Emir of Kuwait, His Highness Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah in Paris on Monday for the signing of two bilateral agreements.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Abdullah al-Yahya signed two declarations of intent in the presence of both the leaders.

The occasion coincides with Bastille Day celebrations in France.

One agreement outlines a Franco-Kuwaiti Strategic Investment Partnership for the 2025–2026 period, focusing on enhanced financial and economic cooperation.

The other aims to deepen cultural collaboration, including the celebration in 2026 of the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between France and Kuwait.

You're dealing with a smoke inhalation, which we know was devastating, five of our guys had to be treated at the hospital, but just how precarious this was with oxygen tanks, so many of them on, and the presence of fires. It's unbelievable that there wasn't an even greater loss of life."

Flames roared through an assisted-living facility in Massachusetts, killing nine people and trapping residents inside, including some who leaned out of windows and screamed for help.

Authorities said at least 30 people were hurt. Firefighters responded late Sunday to the Gabriel House facility in Fall River, about 50 miles south of Boston.

They were met with heavy smoke and flames at the front of the building. The cause was under investigation. Lorraine Ferrara is one of about 70 residents at the facility. She awoke to a neighbor pounding on her door but could not get out of the building. A firefighter broke a window and carried her down a ladder.

STORYLINE:

A large plume of smoke was seen rising in Khan Younis in southern Gaza on Monday as Israel continued its military offensive in the enclave.

Local hospitals say Israeli strikes across the Gaza Strip overnight and into Monday killed at least 30 people.

The 21-month war triggered by Hamas' October 7 attack is raging on after two days of talks between U.S. President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ended last week with no sign of a breakthrough in negotiations over a ceasefire and hostage release.

The war started after Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and taking 251 hostage.

Most of the hostages have been released in earlier ceasefires.

Israel’s offensive in Gaza has killed more than 58,000 Palestinians, more than half of them women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

Israel's air and ground war has destroyed vast areas of Gaza and driven some 90% of the population from their homes.

Aid groups say they have struggled to bring in food and other assistance because of Israeli military restrictions and the breakdown of law and order, and experts have warned of famine.

Once it's boarded up, he said he'll keep someone here, which is what we want. And then I'm insistent that he heads down to the Timao Center and talk to his residents and make plans going forward for what he's gonna do with them because we want them in a place where they're safe and secure and through no fault of their own, we'll do whatever we can to help."

STORYLINE:

Flames roared through an assisted-living facility in Massachusetts, killing nine people and trapping residents inside, including some who were hanging out of windows screaming for help.

Authorities said at least 30 people were hurt. Firefighters responded to the Gabriel House facility in Fall River late Sunday and were met with heavy smoke and flames at the front of the building. About 70 people live there.

The fire was out by Monday morning, and firefighters were able to rescue survivors. Many of those who were rescued were taken to hospitals in varying conditions. 

At a news conference, Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan said the building's owner was cooperating and that the building will soon be boarded up.

"We’ll do whatever we have to do to help these people,” Coogan said of the residents who will now be looking for a new home.

STORYLINE:

France celebrated its biggest holiday Monday with 7,000 people marching, on horseback or riding armored vehicles along the cobblestones of the Champs-Elysées, the most iconic avenue in Paris.

The spectacle began on the ground, with French President Emmanuel Macron reviewing the troops and relighting the eternal flame beneath the Arc de Triomphe.

The Paris event included flyovers by fighter jets, trailing red, white and blue smoke.

Bastille Day commemorates the storming of the Bastille, a fortress and prison, on July 14, 1789, which lead to the French Revolution and the overthrow of the monarchy.

Bastille Day has become a central moment for modern France, celebrating democratic freedoms and national pride, a mélange of revolutionary spirit and military prowess.

Every year, France hosts a special guest for Bastille Day, and this year it’s Indonesia, with President Prabowo Subianto representing the world’s largest Muslim country, which is also a major Asian economic and military player.

Indonesian troops, including 200 traditional drummers, marched in Monday’s parade, and Indonesia is expected to confirm new purchases of Rafale fighter jets and other French military equipment during the visit.

Subianto, who was accused of rights abuses under Indonesia's prior dictatorship, will be treated to a special holiday dinner at the Elysée Palace.

Also in attendance was the Emir of Kuwait, Mishal al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah.
