Poland on Sunday announced new border controls with Germany and Lithuania will last for an initial period of 30 days, though authorities have not ruled out extending them.

"Illegal migration is simply a crime. It is a hybrid tool of Belarus and Russia," said Tomasz Siemoniak, the country's Interior Minister as he shared an update on the reinstated controls.

Poland's border with Lithuania, which stretches 104 kilometers (65 miles), will see checks in 13 locations. Its border with Germany, 467 kilometers (290 miles) long, will have controls at 52 crossing points, Siemoniak said.

The decision to reinstate the controls came after new German Chancellor Friedrich Merz made tougher migration policy a pillar of his election campaign in February.

After he took office in May, Germany stationed more police at the border and said some asylum-seekers trying to enter Europe’s biggest economy would be turned away.

Even before that, Merz's predecessor in February had extended by six months the border checks Germany had imposed on all its frontiers last fall as it attempted to cut the number of migrants arriving in the country.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the reinstatement of the country's border controls earlier this week.

He said he had discussed the issue with Merz, "informing him that the patient position of Poland is slowly being exhausted.”

Tens of thousands of Shiite Muslims across the world marked Ashoura on Sunday, a solemn day marking the 7th-century martyrdom of the Prophet Muhammad’s grandson.

The annual pilgrimage is one of the largest religious events in the Shiite world.

Ashoura holds deep religious and historical significance for Shiites, marking the 680 AD Battle of Karbala, in which Imam Hussein, along with his family and companions, was killed after he refused to pledge allegiance to the Umayyad caliphate, cementing the schism between Sunni and Shiite Islam.

For Shiites, the commemoration has come to symbolize resistance against tyranny and injustice.

In the Iraqi city of Karbala the streets of Karbala were carpeted in red and lined with stations offering food and water to the pilgrims, who came from Iraq’s provinces and from abroad, including large numbers from Iran, the Gulf states, Lebanon and Pakistan.

Black-clad men, women, and children gathered around the shrines of Imam Hussein and his brother Abbas, performing traditional mourning rituals including chest-beating, elegies, and lamentations.

In the Iranian capital, Tehran, mourners took to the streets and marked Ashoura with elegies, beating on their chests and self-flagellating with chains.

Thousands also gathered in the streets of Karachi in Pakistan.

Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo met with swimmers at the Seine Saturday morning as the river reopened for swimming for the first time in a century.

The long-polluted waterway is finally opening up as a summertime swim spot following a 1.4 billion euro ($1.5 billion) clean-up project that made it suitable for Olympic competitions last year.

Three new swimming sites on the Paris riverbank will open on Saturday — one close to Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral, another near the Eiffel Tower and a third in eastern Paris.

Swimming in the Seine has been illegal since 1923, with a few exceptions, due to pollution and risks posed by river navigation. Taking a dip outside bathing areas is still banned for safety reasons.

The Seine was one of the stars of the Paris Olympics in 2024, whether as the scene of the ambitious opening ceremony or the triathlon and marathon swimming competitions. That didn't go without challenging hurdles such as rainfall increasing levels of bacteria, which postponed some competitions.

This city's authorities have given the green light for the public opening, with water quality results consistently in line with European regulations.

Some Parisians also have shown skepticism toward the idea of swimming in the Seine. The feeling is often reinforced by the water's murky color, floating litter and multiple tourist boats in some places.

Leo greeted well-wishers who lined the main road into town to welcome him before waving from the balcony of the villa where he will be staying for what he says will be a “brief period of rest.”

The 69-year-old Chicago native is resuming the papal tradition of leaving the Vatican for the hot summer months in favor of the relatively cooler climes of Castel Gandolfo, overlooking Lake Alban in the hills south of Rome.

Rescuers were scouring a devastated central Texas landscape of mangled trees, overturned cars and muck-filled debris on Sunday in an increasingly bleak mission to locate survivors following a historic flash flood.

Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha said that 11 campers were still missing after the powerful floods surged into a summer camp.

Dozens of people have been killed since raging floodwaters slammed a portion of central Texas starting Friday.

The death toll from flash floods rose to nearly 70 on Sunday after searchers found more more bodies in the hardest-hit Kerr County.

The victims include children who were camping along the Guadalupe River banks.

Officials have said they will not stop searching until every person is found.
