STORYLINE:

Visitors to the Eiffel Tower without tickets were told to postpone their visits on Tuesday in Paris, as the summit of the city’s landmark was closed until Thursday.

In France, the national weather agency Météo-France placed several departments under the highest red alert, with the Paris region particularly hard hit.

The heat wave, defined as consecutive days of very high temperature, is expected to intensify Tuesday with more than 1,300 schools set to be partially or fully closed, the Education Ministry said.

Météo-France also warned of the heightened risk of wildfires due to the drought-stricken soil, compounded by a lack of rain in June and the recent surge in temperature.

Climate experts warn that future summers are likely to be hotter than any recorded to date. By 2100, France could be up to 4 C (39 F) warmer, with temperatures exceeding 40 C expected every year and extreme heat spikes potentially reaching 50 C (122 F).

According to Météo-France, the country may face a tenfold increase in the number of heat wave days by 2100.

STORYLINE:

Seven people from the same family were killed in an airstrike on Monday in central Gaza.

The strike hit a family house in the central town of Zawaida late Monday, killing two parents, two siblings and three grandchildren, according to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital in the nearby town of Deir al-Balah which received the casualties.

The strike flattened the house and severely damaged surrounding buildings, according to residents and footage by The Associated Press showing the aftermath.

Mahmoud Aqeilan, a neighbour who was injured in the airstrike, said the strike turned the house into rubble.

"It wasn’t a missile, it was (more like) an earthquake. There wasn’t a house left that wasn’t destroyed in the area," he said.

The relatives of the deceased gathered on Tuesday morning in the hospital’s courtyard where they held funeral prayers for the dead.

They then took the bodies for burial in a nearby cemetery.

The war has killed over 56,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants. It says more than half of the dead were women and children.

The Hamas attack on October 7 2023 that sparked the war killed some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and saw 251 others taken hostage. Some 50 hostages remain in Gaza, many of them thought to be dead.

Mourners held Muslim funeral prayers on Tuesday for seven people from the same family who were killed in an airstrike the previous day in central Gaza.

STORYLINE:

The Constitutional Court's suspension of Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has raised questions about whether her family's political comeback last year would end with another downfall.

Paetongtarn was the third prime minister in her family, after her father, Thaksin Shinawatra, a telecom billionaire who has been one of Thailand's top political operators, and her aunt, Yingluck Shinawatra, who was the country's first female prime minister. Thaksin was ousted by a military coup in 2006 and Yingluck by a court ruling in 2014.

Thaksin remained beloved after his ouster among voters who saw in him and his allies a government that looked after their interests. While campaigning in 2022, Paetongtarn acknowledged her family ties but insisted she was not her father’s proxy. “It’s not the shadow of my dad. I am my dad’s daughter, always and forever, but I have my own decisions,” she said.

She also said she hoped her government would be able to “build opportunity and quality of life” and “make the country go forward.”

Paetongtarn was suspended Tuesday by the court pending an ethics investigation a leaked phone call with senior Cambodian leader Hun Sen that was perceived as damaging to Thailand's interests and image.
