STORYLINE:

Around 100,000 people defied a government ban and police orders on Saturday to march in what organizers called the largest LGBTQ+ Pride event in Hungary's history in an open rebuke of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán's government.

Marchers gambled with potential police intervention and heavy fines to participate in the 30th annual Budapest Pride, which was outlawed by a law passed in March by Orbán's right-wing populist governing party.

The march began at Budapest City hall and wound through the city centre before crossing the capital's Erzsébet Bridge over the Danube River.

Police diverted the crowd from its planned route to keep it separated from a small group of far-right counter-protesters, while members of Hungary's LGBTQ+ community and large numbers of supporters danced to music and waved rainbow and anti-government flags.

STORYLINE:

Hundreds of people took to the streets in the freezing dusk of Chile's capital on Saturday to watch a performance calling for greater protection of the world's oceans.

The show, entitled "Ocean", tells the story of a castaway and his encounter with the many species inhabiting the South Pacific.

Created from recycled plastics, more than 20 sea creatures were brought to life in Santiago to raise awareness about the harmful effects of plastic pollution on the marine ecosystems along Chile's coast, organizers said.

Iconic species such as jack mackerels, pejeperros, bilagay, flounders and conger eels, among others, made appearances during the show.

The creators, Colectivo Cían, spent three months researching the morphology of these species, conducting creative workshops, and experimenting with layers of plastic bags.

As temperatures dropped to around 9 degrees Celsius (48 degree Fahrenheit), the free event— featuring a 12-meter-long luminous whale and glowing fish —lit up the streets of the Puente Alto district, where the performance lasted approximately two hours.

STORYLINE:

Thousands of swimmers in Chile took a dip in the cold waters of the Magellan Strait on Saturday as part of an annual event.

Around 7,400 people from 16 countries braved the freezing temperatures in the yearly ritual, according to the mayor of Punta Arenas, Claudio Radonich, where the plunge took place.

The temperature of the water was around -6 degrees Celsius (21.2 degrees Fahrenheit), according to officials.

“It started 25 years ago as a joke by a few broadcasters. Only five people joined the first time,” Radonich said.

"This year there was a total recorded of 7,400 participants from 16 countries, but with a desire to seek something different."

Cold-water swims are common in cities across Canada, Russia, northern Europe, and southern Chile.

The dip was part of the “Invernadas, Winter Festival 2025”, organized by the local government.

Tourists come from around the world and many take the chance to see the Strait that connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.

STORYLINE:

Dozens of anti-government protesters were detained during clashes with riot police in Serbia’s capital on Saturday during a massive rally against populist President Aleksandar Vucic demanding an early parliamentary election.

The protest by tens of thousands of demonstrators was held after nearly eight months of persistent dissent led by Serbia's university students that have rattled Vucic's firm grip on power in the Balkan country.

The huge crowd chanted: “We want elections!” as they filled the capital’s central Slavija Square and several blocks around it, with many unable to reach the venue.

Police handcuffed detained protesters, and an officer was seen injured on the ground during street battles in central Belgrade that lasted several hours.

Six police officers and an unknown number of citizens were injured, police said.

Vucic, a former extreme nationalist, has become increasingly authoritarian since coming to power more than a decade ago.

Though he formally says he wants Serbia to join the European Union, critics say Vucic has stifled democratic freedoms as he strengthened ties with Russia and China.

As the protest formally ended, the demonstrators threw eggs, plastic bottles and other objects at riot police who were preventing the crowd from approaching a downtown park.

At the park, hundreds of Vucic's loyalists have been camping for months to form a human shield in front of his headquarters in the capital.

Police later said dozens of “hooligans” were detained but did not provide the exact number.

Some demonstrators wore scarfs and masks over their faces as they clashed with law enforcement, using garbage cans as protection against baton wielding police. Police used pepper spray before pushing protesters with their shields.

Tensions were high before and during the gathering as riot police deployed around government buildings.

University students have been a key force behind nationwide anti-corruption demonstrations that started after a renovated rail station canopy collapsed, killing 16 people on November 1.

Many blamed the concrete roof crash on rampant government corruption and negligence in state infrastructure projects, leading to recurring mass protests.

Vucic and his right-wing Serbian Progressive Party have repeatedly refused the demand for an early vote and accused protesters of planning to spur violence on orders from abroad, which they didn't specify or provide evidence of.

STORYLINE:

Tens of thousands of people rallied in Serbia's capital Belgrade on Saturday aimed at pressuring populist President Aleksandar Vucic to call an early parliamentary election after nearly eight months of protests that have rattled his firm grip on power in the Balkan country.

Tensions have soared before the protest in Belgrade, which has been organized by Serbia's university students, a key force behind nationwide anti-corruption demonstrations that started after a renovated rail station canopy collapsed, killing 16 people on November 1.

Many blamed the concrete roof crash on rampant government corruption and negligence in state infrastructure projects, leading to recurring mass protests.

Vucic and his right-wing Serbian Progressive Party have refused the demand for an early vote and accused protesters of planning to spur violence on orders from abroad, which they didn't specify.

Vucic's authorities have launched a crackdown on Serbia's striking universities and other opponents while increasing pressure on independent media as they tried to curb the demonstrations.

The massive showing at Saturday's rally, however, suggested the protests will persist.
