STORYLINE:

Taipei zoo’s giant panda Yuanbao, the second of her species ever born in Taiwan, celebrated her fifth birthday on Saturday morning.

Excited well-wishers gathered at the enclosure windows to watch her eating a birthday cake made of ice and decorated with assorted fruits.

The cake ended up on the floor but Yuanbao didn't seem to mind.

Yuanbao's mother, Yuanyuan, and father, Tuantuan, were gifted to Taiwan by China in December 2008.

Giant pandas are native only to China, and Beijing bestows them as a sign of political amity.

Yuanyuan and Tuantuan arrived in Taiwan during a period of relative calm between the sides.

Tuantuan died at age 18 in November 2022 but not before fathering two female cubs, Yuanzai and Yuanbao.

Yuanzai, Yuanbao's older sister, was born on 6 July 2013.

All the remaining pandas at Taipei zoo are female.

Taipei zoo holds birthday events for all three of its pandas.

STORYLINE:

Relatives on Friday were mourning for loved ones killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza Strip.

The bodies of the dead were brought to Shifa hospital in Gaza City after two strikes in Jabaliya and one in Gaza City.

Eight people were killed in a strike on a school in Jabaliya and two were killed in a separate strike in Jabaliya, said Shifa hospital, which received the bodies.

One person was killed in the strike in Gaza City, the hospital said.

The war was sparked by Hamas’ surprise attack on southern Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, that killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 251 others hostage.

Many have been released by ceasefire or other agreements.

Gaza's Health Ministry has said Israel’s military operation in Gaza has killed more than 56,000 people.

The ministry says women and children make up more than half of the dead. It does not distinguish between civilians and combatants.

The death toll is by far the highest in any round of Israeli-Palestinian fighting.

Israel says it only targets militants and blames civilian deaths on Hamas, which operates in heavily populated areas.

Israel says over 20,000 Hamas militants have been killed, though it has provided no evidence to support that claim.

Hamas has not commented on its casualties.

A record heat wave that spread across the East Coast of the United States during the first week of summer has child advocates warning parents and caretakers about the risks of heatstroke to children left inside hot vehicles.

Safe Kids Palm Beach County hosted a car seat event offering free or low-cost car seats to families in need while also featuring a car temperature display to raise awareness about the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles.

About 80% of the heat rise in vehicles happens in the first 30 minutes of a child being left inside, when maximum temperatures can exceed 150 degrees Fahrenheit (65-degrees Celsius), according to data compiled by Jan Null, a certified consulting meteorologist at San Jose State University.

As Pride weekend ramps up in San Francisco, thousands gathered for the city's annual Trans March and rally Friday.

Organizers and attendees say this year’s event comes at a critical and deeply troubling moment for transgender Americans.

The Trump administration has moved aggressively to roll back the rights of transgender people, from stripping diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) references from federal funding to bans on gender-affirming care for minors, revoking protections in women’s sports, and reinstating a transgender military ban.

All of these actions, activists state, are part of a politically driven campaign to erase trans identities from public institutions.

The effects are already reverberating.

Hospitals have paused surgeries for gender-diverse youth, and San Francisco–based health and LGBTQ organizations have sued the administration, saying these executive orders threaten their very survival.

Security is tighter this year, with SF Pride boosting measures for Sunday's parade in response to threats that organizers say are emboldened by a federal climate of intolerance.
