STORYLINE:

Guests began arriving at the Aman Hotel in Venice on Thursday for the star-studded wedding of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez.

The nuptials have galvanized an assortment of activist groups protesting it as a sign of growing wealth disparity and disregard of the city’s residents.

About a dozen Venetian organizations have united under the banner “No Space for Bezos.”

The various protests have included anti-Bezos banners on iconic Venetian sites and a mannequin floating down a canal.

Confirmed wedding guests include Mick Jagger, Ivanka Trump, Oprah Winfrey, Katy Perry and Leonardo DiCaprio.

STORYLINE:

Families of Israeli hostages held in Gaza protested in Tel Aviv on Thursday and called on U.S. President Trump to pressure Israel's government to agree a ceasefire deal and stop the war.

Families of hostages hope to ignite momentum for ceasefire talks which stalled during Israel's conflict with Iran.

Yehuda Cohen, the father of hostage Nimrod Cohen, called on Trump to "please finish the job like you promised and make Netanyahu stop the war."

Israel's war with Iran, the first between the two countries, pushed the hostage crisis and the plight of Palestinian civilians in Gaza to the sidelines.

Israel and Iran seemed to honor the fragile U.S.-brokered ceasefire, which ended the conflict, for a third day on Thursday.

Hostage families again found themselves forced to fight for the spotlight with another regional conflagration.

Udi Goren, who's cousin Tal Chaimi was killed on Oct. 7th but whose body is still being held by Hamas, said that "we must reach a deal and this deal would include bringing all the hostages back home."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, riding a wave of public support for the Iran war and its achievements, could feel he has more political wiggle room to move toward ending the war in Gaza, something his far-right governing partners oppose.

The was in Gaza began after Hamas-led militants stormed southern Israel on Oct 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and taking 251 hostages.

The Iran-back militant group is still holding 50 hostages, less than half of them believed to be alive.

Hamas has repeatedly said it is prepared to free all the hostages in exchange for an end to the war in Gaza.

Netanyahu says he will only end the war once Hamas is disarmed and exiled, something the group has rejected.

STORYLINE:

The first astronauts in more than 40 years from India, Poland and Hungary arrived at the International Space Station on Thursday, ferried there by SpaceX on a private flight.

The crew of four will spend two weeks at the orbiting lab, performing dozens of experiments. They launched Wednesday from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center.

America’s most experienced astronaut, Peggy Whitson, is the commander of the visiting crew. She works for Axiom Space, the Houston company that arranged the chartered flight.

Besides Whitson, the crew includes India’s Shubhanshu Shukla, a pilot in the Indian Air Force; Hungary’s Tibor Kapu, a mechanical engineer; and Poland’s Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski, a radiation expert and one of the European Space Agency’s project astronauts on temporary flight duty.

No one has ever visited the International Space Station from those countries before. The time anyone rocketed into orbit from those countries was in the late 1970s and 1980s, traveling with the Soviets.

Speaking in both English and their native languages, the new arrivals shared hugs and handshakes with the space station's seven full-time residents, celebrating with drink pouches sipped through straws. Six nations were represented: four from the U.S., three from Russia and one each from Japan, India, Poland and Hungary.

It's the fourth Axiom-sponsored flight to the space station since 2022. The company is one of several that are developing their own space stations due to launch in the coming years. NASA plans to abandon the International Space Station in 2030 after more than three decades of operation, and is encouraging private ventures to replace it.

STORYLINE:

Bodies of repatriated Ukrainian soldiers arrived to a forensic center in Kyiv for investigation, commencing a long process of identifying servicemen and, eventually, returning them to their mourning families. 

Forensic examiners placed a truck-load of bodies on stretchers one by one, taking them inside the lab where countless tests will be conducted until a DNA profile of each is extracted.

Examiners opened each bag to check its contents.

Most bodies were badly decomposed, and all that remained discernible were the military fatigues and shoes the servicemen presumably were killed in. 

The bodies were repatriated as part of a broader prisoner swap deal reached between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul.

In June, Ukraine and Russia agreed to exchange the bodies of fallen soldiers in a 6,000-for-6,000 format during the second round of negotiations.

On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy formally approved plans to establish a new international court to prosecute senior Russian officials for the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The special tribunal will be created through an agreement between Ukraine and the Council of Europe, the continent’s top human rights body.
