STORYLINE:

The wedding of multi-billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez is expected to take place in the coming days in Venice, where their celebrity friends such as Katy Perry, Oprah Winfrey, Mick Jagger and Ivanka Trump are also expected to attend.

This weekend’s star-studded Venice wedding has galvanized activist groups that are protesting it as a sign of the growing disparity between the haves and have-nots as well as disregard of the city’s residents.

About a dozen Venetian organizations — including housing advocates, anti-cruise ship campaigners and university groups — have united to protest the multi-day event under the banner “No Space for Bezos,” a play on words also referring to the bride’s recent space flight.

They have staged small-scale protests, unfurling anti-Bezos banners on iconic Venetian sites. They were joined this week by Greenpeace and the British group “Everyone Hates Elon,” which has smashed Teslas to protest Elon Musk and unfurled a giant banner in St. Mark’s Square protesting purported tax breaks for billionaires.

Venice, renowned for its romantic canal vistas, hosts hundreds of weddings each year, not infrequently those of the rich and famous.

Previous celebrity weddings, like that of George Clooney to human rights lawyer Amal Alamuddin in 2014, were embraced by the public. Hundreds turned out to wish the couple well at City Hall.

STORYLINE:

As a heatwave spreads across Europe, Budapest Zoo's animal keepers helped cool their elephants with cold water on Wednesday.

According to the HungaroMet, the Hungarian Meteorological Service, temperatures are forecast to peak at 37 degrees Celsius (89 degrees Fahrenheit) in Hungary on Wednesday, following a week of unusually warm weather.

On Thursday, the hottest is expected in the southern part of the country, reaching 39 degrees Celsius (102 degrees Fahrenheit).

Authorities have issued health warnings related to hot weather as Europe bakes under a heatwave.

Since the opening of the Budapest Zoo in 1866, staff have designed the enclosures of the animals which help them to cope in the heat.

Climate change has tripled the frequency of atmospheric wave events linked to extreme summer weather in the last 75 years and that may explain why long-range computer forecasts keep underestimating the surge in killer heat waves, droughts, and floods, a new study says.

In the 1950s, Earth averaged about one extreme weather-inducing planetary wave event a summer, but now it is getting about three per summer, according to a study published earlier in June by the National Academy of Sciences.

STORYLINE:

The sounds of explosions, airstrikes and air defense interceptions are not heard in Tehran anymore following the ceasefire with Israel, but buildings damaged during the war still stand as a reminder of the recent conflict.

Tehran's governor Mohamad Sadegh Motamedian said over 120 homes have been completely destroyed and over 500 others have suffered significant damage, state TV reported on Tuesday.

The fragile ceasefire between Israel and Iran appeared to be holding on Wednesday after a rocky start, giving rise to cautious hope that it could lead to a long-term peace agreement even as Tehran insists it will not give up its nuclear program.

The ceasefire took hold on Tuesday, the 12th day of the war between Israel and Iran, with each side initially accusing the other of violating it until the missiles, drones and bombs finally stopped.

During the 12-day war, at least 28 people were killed in Israel and more than 1,000 wounded, according to officials.

Tehran on Tuesday put the death toll in Iran at 606, with 5,332 people wounded. The Washington-based Human Rights Activists group released figures Wednesday suggesting Israeli strikes on Iran had killed at least 1,054 people and wounded 4,476.

The group, which has provided detailed casualty figures from multiple rounds of unrest in Iran, said 417 of those killed were civilians and 318 were security force personnel.

During the war, Israeli airstrikes also targeted Iran’s top military leadership and other sites associated with its ruling theocracy.

With the ceasefire in place, Iranians are trying to return to their normal lives.

Thousands of protesters against police brutality and government corruption clashed with police in Nairobi, who hurled tear gas canisters and wielded batons, leaving several people injured, as demonstrations spread around the country.

The protests were timed to mark the one-year anniversary of anti-tax demonstrations in which 60 people were killed and 20 others remain missing.

Parliament and the president’s office in the Kenya’s capital were barricaded with razor wire, with all access roads blockaded by police.

The protests, which have now spread to major cities including Mombasa, Kisumu, Nakuru and Nyahururu, have morphed into calls for the president to resign due to what protesters are saying is poor governance.

During last year's protests, demonstrators stormed Parliament where a legislation to increase taxes was passed, burning part of the building as lawmakers fled. Bodies lay in the streets, and medical workers and watchdogs said police had opened fire. The military was deployed.

Kenyan youth remain unhappy with the current administration due to corruption, rising cost of living and police brutality, and the recent death of a blogger in custody.

The close-range shooting of a civilian during recent protests has exacerbated public anger.

Young Kenyans used social media to plan protests in remembrance of those who died last year.

The government spokesperson, Isaac Mwaura, on Monday said there would be no protests, and that Wednesday was a “normal working day.”

But businesses in Nairobi on Wednesday remained closed and police limited the movement of vehicles into the central business district.

An Associated Press journalist witnessed a demonstrator being injured in the mouth by a round fired by police towards a crowd. Another protester was clobbered on the head by antiriot police and was taken by medics in an ambulance.
