  • Lines stretch outside the Louvre in Paris as opening delayed for undisclosed emergency meeting

    STORYLINE:
The Louvre Museum failed to open on time Monday, leaving thousands of visitors stuck in long, unmoving lines outside the iconic Paris institution as staff held a protest over working conditions.
According to union representative Sarah Sefian of the CGT-Culture, the disruption was caused by a spontaneous movement among front-of-house staff, including gallery attendants, reception, and security workers, who are protesting deteriorating labor conditions.
“What began as a scheduled monthly information session turned into a mass expression of exasperation,” she said. “Staff decided to stay together until management arrived.”
Sefian said the agents gathered in the auditorium at 10:30 a.m. for talks with the museum’s leadership. “All roles related to visitor reception are affected,” she said. “Overcrowding and understaffing are the main issues being raised.”
As of midday, the museum remained closed, with lines snaking past I.M. Pei’s famous glass pyramid and deep into the underground shopping complex.
Some ticket-holders gave up and left, creating the illusion of movement in the queues.
A message on the museum’s official website stated: “Due to strikes in France, the museum may open later and some exhibition rooms may remain closed. We thank you for your understanding.”
Union officials say the museum may reopen Monday afternoon.

    STORYLINE:
The Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Monday that it was deeply disappointed that Cambodia refused to address the ongoing border disputes through the existing mechanism of bilateral talks.
Speaking to reporters at a press briefing in Bangkok, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nikorndej Balankura said that it is "clear and unfortunate that Cambodia has not reciprocated our good faith."
Officials of the two countries met over the weekend in Cambodia’s capital, Phnom Penh, on the conflicting territorial claims that led to last month’s deadly confrontation.
While both sides said the meeting was held in a good atmosphere, it appears no major breakthrough was achieved to resolve the current spat.
Cambodia on Sunday said it has officially submitted a request to the U.N.’s International Court of Justice, seeking a resolution to the ongoing border disputes with Thailand in four areas.
The Cambodia’s State Secretariat of Border Affairs said after the weekend meetings concluded that Cambodia would no longer discuss these areas under the bilateral mechanism of the two countries.
Nikorndej said that Cambodia's unwillingness to discuss the areas was a "disappointment for the Thai side."

  • Doctors Without Borders makes plea to EU leaders to pressure Israel over Gaza
    (16 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Brussels, Belgium - 16 June 2025
    1. Various of news conference
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Christopher Lockyear, Doctors Without Borders Director General:
"We're in Brussels today to deliver an open letter with a clear message to leaders of the European Union ahead of next week's foreign affairs and European councils. Our message to the leaders is simple. We urge you to use all political, economic, and diplomatic tools to exert real pressure on Israel to stop the carnage in Gaza. And to allow unhindered humanitarian aid."
    3. Cutaway
    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Omar Ebeid. Doctors Without Borders Emergency Coordinator:
"I honestly don't know what to say. It seems in the past 20 months, everything has already been said. Again, international media and human rights organizations have not been let in to have international reporting on the atrocities and humanitarians are constantly doubted and questioned because the image we're providing and what we are witnessing either does not want to be believed or because it goes against the Israeli narrative. The argument of Israel's right to defend itself has been tabled as a carte blanche to carry out crimes on the Palestinian population. We spend our times trying to question and go through trying to define what we witness are either war crimes or crimes against humanity or ethnic cleansing or genocide or patterns of genocide."
    5. Cutaway
    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Omar Ebeid, Doctors Without Borders Emergency Coordinator:
"So we have been asked to do more than our jobs. It's not enough to try to provide healthcare and protect our teams and bringing in supplies during a blockade and trying to guess where the next target is. We also have to defend what we see is real, to push states to take a stand and allow humanitarian aid in and to not undermine the humanitarian channels through the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. We're asking every one of our staff to go over and beyond. We also have to speak out while risking the sustainability of our activities and causing possible blockages and compromises of our operations."
    7. Various cutaways
    8. SOUNDBITE (English) Virginia Moneti, Doctors Without Borders Medical Doctor:
"Healthcare staff in Gaza is operating beyond the limits of human endurance and they themselves, as it was said, have been displaced several times. They need to leave the medical activities to take care of their family. They have lived a total disruption of their normal life and of their social and supportive network. The mental health toll on our staff is heavy and on everybody. In the last two months, we have seen at least three of our staff had to be admitted to the hospital and they become patient themselves. And this is not sustainable. This is not humane. So we really call for action now. We need humanitarian aid to enter Gaza. Now we need this to stop."

    STORYLINE:
The Paris Air show at Le Bourget, one of the biggest aviation events in the world, kicked off on Monday.
Around 2,500 exhibitors from 48 countries are listed to attend with more than 300,000 visitors expected to get up close to the latest in air industry technology.
Huge aircrafts, aviation tech and hundreds of air demonstrations will be on display.
The event addresses current issues and looks at its future. It comes at a difficult time for aviation business.
Uncertainty about U.S. tariffs have rattled global financial market and generated recession fears, leading consumers and businesses to start pulling back on spending, which includes travel.
Major U.S. airlines have reduced their flight schedules and revised or withdrawn their profit outlooks for the year due to less domestic travel demand as concerns about the national and global economies sours.
The aviation world is still reeling from the Air India crash that killed at least 270 people in Gujarat state.
Boeing, the manufacturer of the 787 Dreamliner aircraft involved in the tragedy, is still attending the show but its senior leaders will not be there.
The Paris Air Show runs from June 16 to 22.
