    STORYLINE:
The iconic Mount Fuji provided a scenic backdrop for the annual live fire drill by Japan's Ground Self-Defense Force on Sunday.
The Fuji Firepower Exercise 2025 simulated a battle scene taking place on a remote island.
It involved around 2,900 personnel, 50 tanks and armored vehicles and 20 aircrafts.
Guests and thrill-seekers were entertained by the troops putting the military hardware through its paces.
More than 76 tons of ammunition worth 870 million yen (6,003,087 U.S. dollars) were expected to be used during the drill.
Japan has been accelerating a military buildup to fortify itself against growing threats from China, North Korea and Russia.
Late last year, the government approved a record 8.7 trillion yen (60 trillion dollars) defense budget for 2025.
Japan aims to eventually double its annual military spending to around 10 trillion yen ($63 billion).
That would make it the world’s No. 3 military spender, after the United States and China.

  • Pressure to turn promises into action as UN Ocean Conference opens in France; AP explains

    Hyères, France - 6 June 2025
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Annika Hammerschlag, The Associated Press:
"The United Nations Ocean Conference is kicking off in Nice, France, and there's a lot on the line. World leaders, scientists, and activists are here trying to figure out how to turn years of ocean promises into real action. Right now, only about 3% of the ocean is actually protected from harmful practises like industrial fishing and deep sea mining, even though countries have agreed to protect 30% of ocean by 2030. One of the big goals this week is to push forward the High Seas Treaty. It's a major international deal that would finally let countries create marine-protected areas in international waters, which make up about two-thirds of the entire ocean. They'll need to get 60 ratifications in order to cross the finish line. The conference will also dive into issues like deep sea mining, climate funding, plastic pollution, and sustainable fishing. By the end of the week, countries are expected to agree on something called the Nice Ocean Action Plan, which is basically a list of commitments that they'll take to the UN in New York later this summer. So why does all this matter? Because the ocean gives us half the oxygen we breathe, soaks up a huge share of our carbon emissions, and helps regulate the climate. It's also the backbone of entire economies, from global fisheries to coastal communities. That depend on it to survive. What happens in the ocean doesn't just stay there, it affects all of us."

    4. Various of corals underwater
    5. Boat on surface of water
    STORYLINE:
The third United Nations Ocean Conference opens Monday amid rising pressure for nations to turn decades of promises into real protection for the sea.
The weeklong summit comes as just 2.7% of the ocean is effectively protected from destructive extractive activities, according to ocean advocacy nonprofit Marine Conservation Institute.
That's far below the target agreed under the global “30x30” pledge to conserve 30% of land and sea by 2030.
Atop this year’s agenda is a diplomatic race to ratify the High Seas Treaty.
Adopted in 2023, the treaty would for the first time allow nations to establish marine protected areas in international waters, which cover nearly two-thirds of the ocean and are largely ungoverned.
The ocean is critical in stabilizing Earth’s climate and sustaining life.
It generates 50% of the oxygen we breathe, absorbs around 30% of carbon dioxide emissions and captures more than 90% of the excess heat caused by those emissions.
Without a healthy ocean, experts warn, climate goals will remain out of reach.
The treaty will only come into force once 60 countries ratify it. As of June 8, just 32 countries had... [truncated]

"So, I'm here at Fenway Park, watching the very first boxing matches after 70 years of not being here, so they're coming back. I'm not here for baseball. My mother's a Yankees fan. I'm from New York, I'm sorry. But yeah, I am here in Fenway to watch boxing. I think my mother would disown me if I was watching baseball."

And then to see people, you know, these guys... everyone in there is busting their, you know, they're putting their hearts in this. And it's pretty incredible to watch. You know, like, right behind us there's two women going at it right now, you know. So it's incredible."

As an ex-boxer myself, it's great watching, you know, women come up and do their thing. So, I'm glad to be part of history."

"No, I was absolutely shocked when my friends sent me an invite. Well, first they bombarded me on FaceTime, then they sent me and invite to come and watch their match in Boston, and then when I saw it was in Fenway Park, I was actually shocked. But then to find out that it was, like, under the bleachers, it was weird, but it's very, it's an interesting environment to watch it in. So this is, it is a cool experience."
