  • Soup kitchen distributes hot food to displaced Palestinians in Gaza City on second day of Eid
    (7 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
Gaza City, Gaza Strip - 7 June 2025
    1. Children carrying empty pots waiting for food at a soup kitchen distributing meals
    2. Close-up on empty pots
    3. Various of women attempting to get soup
    4. SOUNDBITE(Arabic), Farida al-Sayed, displaced from Jabaliya:
"I live here in a tent behind the bathrooms. I came from Jabaliya and am living now behind the bathrooms. I have been standing here for more than an hour-and-a-half, I feel I have a sunstroke, and I am in need. I only had lentils, and I ran out of them. I have six people that's why I am forced to stand like this, what can we do? Thank God for everything, but I am forced to stand here."
    5. Various of crowd with pots shouting and pushing and surrounding soup kitchen
    STORYLINE:
Desperate Palestinians in Gaza queued for food at a soup kitchen, Saturday, on the second day of Eid al-Adha.
Hundreds of men women, children stood in the heat waiting for the free handout.
For many it will be their only food to share with their families during the important religious holiday.
Palestinians have become increasingly desperate for food as nearly three months of Israeli border closures have pushed the Gaza Strip to the brink of famine.
Farida al-Sayed, displaced from Jabaliya, said she had been standing waiting for an hour-and-a-half to get food for six people.
"I feel I have a sunstroke, and I am in need. I only had lentils, and I ran out of them."
After blocking all food and aid from entering Gaza for more than two months, Israel began allowing a trickle of supplies to enter for the U.N. several weeks ago.
But the U.N says it has been unable to distribute much of the aid because of Israeli military restrictions on movements and because roads that the military designates for its trucks to use are unsafe and vulnerable to looters.
The U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome said Thursday that Gaza's people are projected to fall into acute food insecurity by September, with nearly 500,000 people experiencing extreme food deprivation, leading to malnutrition and starvation.
The war broke out on Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants launched a surprise attack on Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted 251 hostages.
They are still holding 56 hostages, around a third of them believed to be alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals.
Israeli forces have rescued eight living hostages from Gaza and recovered dozens of bodies.
Since then, Israel has killed more than 54,000 Palestinians in its military campaign, primarily women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its figures.
The offensive has destroyed large parts of Gaza and displaced around 90% of its population of roughly 2 million Palestinians.

"Since the Middle Ages, Catholic pilgrims have been coming to the tiny hamlet of El Rocío in southern Spain to venerate an icon of the Virgin Mary. Today, 'la romería del rosío' has become one of the biggest, most unique, wildest pilgrimages in the Catholic world. Over Pentecost weekend, about a million people travel from all over the region and beyond - on foot, on horses, on carts - bringing their own mini icons on little carts. And they do so in an atmosphere that is equally devout and festive. There is a lot of partying, a lot of flamenco dancing. You see me wearing a flamenco dress that all of the women also wear. There is a lot of drinking. And yes, there is this party atmosphere, but there are also very devout, very solemn moments."

    STORYLINE:
One of the largest, oldest, and wildest pilgrimages in the Catholic world is being held this week in Spain.
Tens of thousands of pilgrims — many of them outfitted in tiered flamenco dresses, crisp riding suits and wide-brimmed Cordoba hats — descended on the tiny Spanish village of El Rocío to take part in riotously colorful and ancient festival, la Romería del Rocío, or the Rocío virgin pilgrimage.
For several days, droves of people — entire families or groups of friends — wind their way across different country paths and roads, many of them on foot while others go by horse or in elaborately decorated horse-drawn wagons or caravans, kicking up clouds of dust in the sun-baked countryside of southern Andalucía as they go.
The pilgrimage, organized by dozens of “brotherhoods” is a veritable explosion of colour and revelry.
A heady mix of religion and raucous celebration, the style of dress, food, drink and song are as much a part of the festival as devotion to the virgin.
The pilgrims eat out in the countryside and often camp out there, too.
After several days of traveling, the pilgrims converge on the tiny, white-washed hamlet of El Rocío, whose name means morning dew and whose only reason for existing is the sanctuary of the virgin.
There, on the eve of each Whit or Pentecost Monday, they take a huge ornate float carrying the effigy of the virgin known as the Blanca Paloma (white dove) and parade it around the town, visiting the main brotherhoods at each of their grand meeting places that line the... [truncated]

    STORYLINE:
Funerals were held in Gaza, Saturday, for 7 people, including a mother and 5 children, who died following an Israeli strike on an apartment in Gaza City.
The bodies of the mother, 4 minors and a 19-year-old were taken, Saturday morning, to Shifa hospital which confirmed the number of casualties.
A total of 22 people were killed on Friday night across Gaza Strip, according to hospitals in the territory.
Hamed Keheel, a relative, told how his uncle's home was targetted around 4.15am.
"We woke up to the strikes and found destruction, screaming and rocks hitting us."
As well as the dead, he said there were people with severe injuries.

"Eid used to be different. Instead of us eating rice and leftover lentils from yesterday with the rice that I made because we don’t have bread as we haven’t had flour in a while. We used to have meat and liver for a meal in Eid and children would be happy about Eid’s overall atmosphere. There are no Eid celebrations now as there is no new clothes or sacrificial meat, or monetary gifts, or joy. There’s no Eid atmosphere at all. We don’t want anything. We don’t want joyful celebrations. We just want the warplanes to lessen their operations. My son went out and tried to celebrate Eid and was scared of the warplanes so he came back. He just wanted to feel like it's Eid and perform Eid prayers. He didn’t want food, clothes, or monetary gifts, he just wanted to pray Eid prayers. My children were scared and didn’t attend Eid prayers because of the heavy airstrikes."

    STORYLINE:
Displaced Palestinian families faced a grim first day of Eid Al-Adha on Friday, with little to eat, no sacrificial meat, no new clothes, and none of the usual festive spirit that typically marks the holiday.
Tahrir Abu Jazar, a displaced 36-year-old woman from Rafah, cooked lentils and rice inside her tent in Muwasi for her five children, who sat on the bare ground with their uncovered feet in the dirt.
One child clapped with excitement, overjoyed at the prospect of having something to eat.
Abu Jazar can’t obtain flour to make bread and or bring food from the Israeli-operated aid distribution centers, fearing she or her family would be fatally shot like others over the past week.
“There are no Eid celebrations now as there is no new clothes or sacrificial meat, or monetary gifts, or joy,” she said, reminiscing over Eid days before the war when the children could have meat.
Now, all she says she wants is for warplanes to reduce their operations.
“My son went out and tried to celebrate Eid and was scared of the warplane so he came back. He just wanted to perform Eid prayers. He didn’t want food, clothes, or monetary gifts…my children were scared and didn’t attend Eid prayers because of the heavy airstrikes,” she said.
Plumes of black smoke rose near the displacement camp.
Outside the tents, some children—dressed in torn clothes—played in the sand and on a makeshift swing.

Then we couldn't do anything because we were under their control. After that they started asking for more money and pressuring us to ask for more money from our parents or relatives, they kept us in their safe houses, we were unable to go outside. Then we asked for more money from our family and gave it to them, they (smugglers) kept moving us from one safe house to another. This was going on for almost seven months in Nouakchott."

"Over the next couple of days, they will continue to gather and travel at a very slow pace through the remote wetlands to El Rocío, and eventually, they will celebrate with a very big mass and then they will travel back home, to start planning next year's pilgrimage. This is essential to their identity. It is essential to their faith, and it is as unique as this pristine wild natural environment where it is being held."

    8. SOUNDBITE (English) Rana Javed, Australian Pilgrim:
"Stoning the pillars, the symbol of Satan, basically it is the sunnah of Ibrahim, prophet Ibrahim, when he was going to slaughter, to fulfil his dream, to slaughter his son, and Satan was intercepting him. And therefore, he stood once and he stoned him, again he intercepted him and tried to divide his attention, so he can deviate from the commandment of his lord, praise him."

    STORYLINE:
Muslim pilgrims in Mina continued the symbolic stoning of the devil on Saturday, marking the second day of the ritual that commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s rejection of Satan.
The act, a core part of the final stages of the Hajj pilgrimage, unfolded under intense summer heat as worshippers circled through the Jamarat site, throwing pebbles at three large pillars representing the devil.
The stoning is performed over three days in Mina, east of Mecca, during the Islamic festival of Eid al-Adha.
On the second day, pilgrims follow a specific sequence: beginning with the smallest pillar, followed by the middle, and ending with the largest.
"We feel privileged that we have the means to come here, and therefore we have come here," said Rana Javed, a pilgrim from Australia.
"This is a spiritual rejuvenation and a special sort of practice of all the prophets — like Prophet Ibrahim and our beloved Prophet Mohammed, peace be upon him — who performed this Hajj once in his lifetime. And we are doing it exactly the same way, even after 1,400 years."
Across Mina, thousands of worshippers paused between rituals to pray or rest under shaded areas.
Many sat on the ground after completing the stoning, while others walked quietly through the tented city or refilled water bottles to cool off.
Saudi authorities maintained crowd flow and medical services to ensure safety amid the hot conditions.
"Stoning the pillars, the symbol of Satan, is the sunnah of Ibrahim," Javed added.
