STORYLINE:

A church in Nigeria is uniting parishioners who are deaf, mute or living with hearing impairment by offering services in sign language.

The Christian Mission for the Deaf church offers sermons, sign language tuition, and social events for a community that is often ignored or feared by Nigerian society.

To the beat of drums, the congregation at this Lagos church are worshipping using sign language.

This is a branch of the Christian Mission for the Deaf, a church for deaf and mute people in Somolu, a mixed-income suburb in Nigeria's largest city.

"Before, I was attending a hearing church with my family when I was a child. I did not understand what they were saying, so I would just sit down there. I did not understand anything they were saying because I am deaf," says churchgoer, Oluwakemi Oluwatoke-Ogunjirin.

Remi Akinremi is one of the pastors of the church. Every Sunday, he mounts the pulpit with charismatic energy to preach to the dozens in the congregation.

His big frame makes for a commanding presence on the altar as he preaches.

In African societies, the perception of people with disabilities is influenced by traditional beliefs, sometimes as a divine punishment.

Hundreds of thousands of young catholics were woken up by the arrival of Pope Leo XIV on Sunday morning at the Tor Vergata esplanade, in Rome's suburbs.

Approximately a million young people according to the Vatican spent the night in sleeping bags waiting for the Sunday mass.

The Pope during the Saturday evening vigil urged hundreds of thousands of young people to have the courage to make radical choices to do good, as he presided over his first big encounter with the next generation of Catholics during the highlight of the Vatican’s 2025 Holy Year.

Leo encountered a sea of people as he arrived by helicopter at the Tor Vergata field on Rome’s outskirts for the Sunday mass.

Hailing from over 150 countries, the pilgrims had set up campsites in the field for the night.

Nasser Hospital said it received five bodies after two Israeli strikes on tents sheltering displaced people in Gaza’s south.

The health ministry’s ambulance and emergency service said a strike hit a house between the towns of Zawaida and Deir al-Balah, killing two parents and their three children.

Another strike hit a tent in Khan Younis, killing a mother and her daughter.

Young Catholics have been speaking about their feelings after Pope Leo addressed the Holy Year youth festival in Rome on Saturday.

Hundreds of thousands of young people from all over the world are attending the Jubilee of Youth on the outskirts of Rome.

Leo spoke about the dangers of social media and the value of true friendship.

Afterwards young people shared their feelings.

Rodrigo Zapata, 26, from Mexico, spoke about the need to "fight for peace."

The Office of Special Counsel on Saturday confirmed the investigation. The Office of Special counsel is an independent federal agency.

Smith was named a special counsel to investigate Trump by then-Attorney General Merrick Garland.

Trump and other Republicans, including Sen. Tom Cotton, have — without offering evidence — accused Smith of violating federal law that bans certain public officials from engaging in political activity.

Smith prosecuted federal cases against Trump.

Smith dropped the cases after Trump’s reelection and resigned his post.
