  • Polls open in South Korea's snap presidential election

    STORYLINE:
Polls opened in the South Korean capital of Seoul on Tuesday morning, as South Koreans are voting for a new president in a snap election triggered by the ouster of Yoon Suk Yeol, a conservative who faces a criminal trial over his short-lived imposition of martial law in December.
Pre-election surveys suggested Yoon’s liberal archrival, Lee Jae-myung, appeared headed for an easy win, riding on deep public frustration over the conservatives in the wake of Yoon’s martial law debacle.
The main conservative candidate, Kim Moon Soo, has struggled to win over moderate, swing voters as his People Power Party remains in a quagmire of internal feuding over how to view Yoon’s actions.
This election serves as another defining moment in the country’s resilient democracy, but observers worry a domestic divide worsened by Yoon is far from over and could pose a big political burden on the new president.
The past six months saw large crowds of people rallying in the streets to either denounce or support Yoon, while a leadership vacuum caused by Yoon’s impeachment and ensuing formal dismissal rattled the country’s high-level diplomatic activities and financial markets.
The winning candidate will immediately be sworn in as president Wednesday for a single, full term of five years without the typical two-month transition period.
The new president will face major challenges including a slowing economy, President Donald Trump’s America-first policies and North Korea’s evolving nuclear threats.
The election commission says voting began at 6 a.m. at 14,295 polling stations nationwide that will close at 8 p.m. Observers say the winner could emerge as early as midnight.

  • Kyiv residents and military react after latest round of Ukraine-Russia talks in Istanbul

    2. Various of people walking near the memorial
    3. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Oleh Nikolenko, 43, Ukrainian serviceman:
"Who can they negotiate peace with? They can negotiate a prisoner exchange, that's good. They won't negotiate peace with anyone. And in general, the terms of peace that Russia puts forward and the terms of peace that Ukraine puts forward do not match at all. That is, as long as we hold on, Ukraine will stand. As soon as we say that is peace, then we can think about something bad, it seems to me."
    4. Close of flags on memorial
    5. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Oleh Nikolenko, 43, Ukrainian serviceman:
"When there will be talks about ending the war, then of course there will be some negotiations. But again, who makes the decisions? Not the people who have just arrived in Istanbul. They are not the ones making the decisions on the part of Russia. I don't quite understand why we are raising this question when these people are not deciding this. That's why it seems to me that not yet (negotiations will happen). But when there will be a couple more such cool operations (destroying Russian planes), then everything will change. But again, personally I don't believe in it. Russia has invested too many resources in this war to just take it and stop for nothing. That's when they can no longer do it, then they will stop, but then they will fall apart and I sincerely believe in it."
    6. Wide of Nikolenko's family walking near memorial
    7. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Anastasia Nikolenko, 38, Kyiv resident, designer:

    9. Various of memorial
    10. SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) Yurii Polishchuk, 52, Kyiv resident, university lecturer:
"The events of the last few hours, when a third of the Russian strategic aircraft were destroyed, have significantly strengthened the position of our negotiators in Istanbul. However, it is difficult to hope that the terrorist state will change its intentions, its methods, its measures in relation to Ukraine. I, for example, cannot count on everything being resolved peacefully in the near future. At the same time, I am pleased that in three years this is the first opportunity in my memory of talks at the level of delegations, perhaps not even the most influential ones, about what can put an end to this war."

    STORYLINE:
Syrian authorities and a Kurdish-led force exchanged Monday more than 400 prisoners as part of a deal reached earlier this year between the two sides.
The exchange in the northern city of Aleppo is a step in the process of confidence-building measures between the government in Damascus and the U.S.-backed and Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.
A similar exchange took place in April.
Mulham al-Akidi, the deputy governor of Aleppo province, said 470 prisoners were released by both sides adding that the exchange “aims to reduce tensions on the ground.”
He added that if there are more prisoners they will be released in the near future.
Yasser Mohammed Hakim said he was detained six months ago after he drove into an SDF-controlled area by mistake.
The man added that he was held in a jail where members of the Islamic State group are held in Syria.
“They put us with the biggest terrorists,” Hakim told The Associated Press after his release by the SDF.
“I am a civilian who took the wrong road. I lost six months of my life.”
In March, Syria’s interim government signed a deal with the Kurdish-led authority that controls the country’s northeast, including a ceasefire and the merging of the main U.S.-backed force there into the Syrian army.
Since the deal was signed, the clashes between the SDF and the Syrian National Army, a coalition of Turkey-backed groups, almost stopped in northern Syria after months of fighting that left dozens killed or wounded on both sides.
Syria’s new rulers are struggling to exert their authority across the country and reach political settlements with different ethnic and religious groups in the war-torn nation.

“Throughout this enhanced immigration enforcement operation, ICE and our federal partners targeted the most dangerous alien offenders in some of the most crime-infested neighborhoods of Massachusetts. Our efforts resulted in the arrests of 1,461 criminal alien offenders. 277 of those offenders have been ordered removed from the United States by a Justice Department immigration judge.”

    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Todd Lyons, Acting Director, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement:
“If sanctuary cities would change their policies and turn these violent criminal aliens over to us into our custody, instead of releasing them into the public, we would not have to go out to the communities and do this. Boston’s my hometown and it really shocks me that officials all over Massachusetts would rather release sex offenders, fentanyl dealers, drug dealers, human traffickers, and child rapists back into the neighborhoods.”

    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Todd Lyons, Acting Director, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement:
“Two weeks ago, in Los Angeles where we ran an operation where ICE officers were doxxed. So, let’s just say that again. People are out there taking photos of the names, their faces, and posting them online with death threats to their family and themselves. So, I’m sorry if people are offended by them wearing masks but I’m not going to let my officers and agents go out there and put their lives on the line and their family on the line because people don’t like what immigration enforcement is.”

    STORYLINE:
Immigration and Customs Enforcement Acting Director Todd Lyons on Monday defended the use of masks by his agents and expressed frustration at sanctuary jurisdictions that he said are hindering the detainment of immigrants who are in the country illegally.
During a press conference at the federal courthouse in Boston announcing a May operation in Massachusetts where nearly 1,500 immigrants were taken into custody, Lyons said his agents wear masks because they and their families have been doxxed and “targeted" with death threats.
“So, I’m sorry if people are offended by them wearing masks, but I’m not going to let my officers and agents go out there and put their lives on the line, their family on the line because people don’t like what immigration enforcement is,” he said.

  • White House says Boulder terror attack 'unacceptable', and call between Trump and Xi is 'likely'
    (2 Jun 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Washington, DC - 2 June 2025
    1. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt walks toward reporters on the north lawn of the White House
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Karoline Leavitt, White House press secretary:
"We have seen two horrific cases of anti-semitic violence in our country in the last two weeks, and it is unacceptable to this president and this White House. And rest assured, to all Jewish Americans across our great country, this president has your back. And he's not going to allow anyone to take part in violent terrorism, it's acts of terrorism in our country. And that's what this case in Boulder, Colorado, is being investigated as. Kudos to our FBI director, Kash Patel, for immediately calling this a targeted terrorist attack. That's clearly what it was. But I'd also like to point out that this administration has done more than any administration to curb this violence and to curb illegal immigration. We secured our border in record time, but we're also tightening up our visa process and our legal immigration process. And we know that this individual, this terrorist, was allowed into this country by the previous administration, was foolishly given a tourism visa, and then was illegally allowed to stay. These individuals are going to be deported, and we're not going to tolerate such violence in our country."
    ++WHITE FLASH++
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Karoline Leavitt, White House press secretary:
"Sure. She asked about the potential call with President Xi. I can confirm that the two leaders will likely talk this week. And as always, when there are foreign leaders calls, we will provide a readout of those calls. So we'll see you guys later. Thank you."
    5. Leavitt walks away from reporters
    STORYLINE:
The White House said the violence seen in Boulder, Colorado Sunday is "unacceptable" after a man accused of using a makeshift flamethrower and an incendiary device to attack a group that had gathered to bring attention to Israeli hostages in Gaza.
"And rest assured, to all Jewish Americans across our great country, this president has your back. And he's not going to allow anyone to take part in... acts of terrorism in our country," said White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt Monday.
The suspect, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, told police he planned it for a year and specifically targeted what he described as the “Zionist group,” the FBI said. Eight people were injured in the attack, some with burns, as a group was concluding their weekly demonstration to raise visibility for the hostages who remain in Gaza. Witnesses reported the man yelled “Free Palestine” during the attack.
Soliman has been charged with a federal hate crime, according to court documents filed Monday.
Authorities said they believe Soliman acted alone. He was also injured and taken to a hospital. Authorities did not elaborate on the nature of his injuries, but a booking photo showed him with a large bandage ove... [truncated]
