  • Palestinians on ceasefire talks developments as Hamas seeks amendments to US proposal
    (31 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Deir al-Balah, Gaza Strip - 31 May 2025
    1. Cart carrying people moving out of hospital
    2. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Motasim (no last name available), resident from Al-Bureij camp:
    ++PARTIALLY COVERED++
"We suffered, we died of hunger, no one cared about us, no Arab cares about us. Thank God, we hope to God that we will be rid of this war. We want to stop the bloodshed. We don't want aid from anyone. We will plant and feed ourselves. We hope to God that the bloodshed in Gaza will stop, the massacres that are taking place daily. We are exhausted. I swear to God, we are exhausted."
    3. Various of people walking in the street
    4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Abu Tamer Haniyeh, resident:
    ++PARTIALLY COVERED++
"A fundamental demand of every Palestinian, young and old, is to stop the war and establish calm so that aid can reach the people properly."
    5. People walking in the street
    STORYLINE:
Hamas is seeking amendments to the latest U.S. ceasefire proposal for Gaza, a senior official with the group told The Associated Press on Saturday, as Palestinians in the Gaza Strip expressed hope the war would stop soon.
The Hamas official, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the talks, said proposed amendments focused on “the U.S. guarantees, the timing of hostage release, the delivery of aid and the withdrawal of Israeli forces.”
A separate Hamas statement said the proposal aimed for a permanent ceasefire, a comprehensive Israeli withdrawal from Gaza and an ensured flow of aid.
It added that 10 living hostages and the bodies of 18 others would be released ” in exchange for an agreed-upon number of Palestinian prisoners.”
Israeli officials have approved the U.S. proposal for a temporary ceasefire in the nearly 20-month war and U.S. President Donald Trump has said negotiators are nearing a deal.
Reacting to the latest developments, one man in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip said Palestinians hoped 'to God that we will be rid of this war," adding that they were "tired" of the relentless bloodshed.
As dusk settled over the city, another man said he hoped a deal would be agreed soon so that aid could be distributed.
A ceasefire would pause the fighting for 60 days, release some of the 58 hostages still held in Gaza in exchange for Palestinian prisoners and much-needed food aid and other assistance, according to Hamas and Egyptian officials who spoke earlier on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.
The nearly three-month blockade on Gaza has pushed the population of over 2 million to the brink of famine. While pressure slightly eased in recent days as Israel allowed some aid to enter, aid organizations say far from enough food is getting in.

We have our ship, the sailing boat Madleen, which will carry 12 activists to Gaza, but most importantly, we are carrying humanitarian aid, which is medicine, we have crutches, we have food, we have baby formula because all of these are not allowed into Gaza. Not that there not - only these products are not allowed in Gaza, for many, many years, even before the genocide it was very much controlled. But since almost 3 months we are seeing a total blockade, around Gaza an inhumane siege. Nothing is entering, not one bottle of water, not one bag of flour is entering Gaza at this very moment. Israel is using starvation as a weapon of war.”
    11. Various aerial drone shots of the port and the Madleen anchored off the shore ++MUTE++
    STORYLINE:
Activists from a human rights organization trying to bring aid to Gaza gathered in Catania, Sicily, on Saturday, a day ahead of their departure for the Mideast. Their last attempt to bring aid to Gaza was foiled by a drone attack off the coast of Malta.
This time, the group will be using the yacht “Madleen” for the trip. On Saturday, activists gathered food and sanitary supplies in boxes to be delivered to Gaza as they prepared for their departure. Just offshore, two Palestinian flags blew in the wind on the bow of the Madleen.
Activist Yasemin Acar told reporters, “We have our ship, the sailing boat Madleen, which will carry 12 activists to Gaza, but most importantly, we are carrying humanitarian aid, which is medicine, we have crutches, we have food, we have baby formula because all of these are not allowed into Gaza,” concluding, “Israel is using starvation as a weapon of war.”
Climate activist Greta Thunberg appeared briefly at the event Saturday afternoon but quickly disappeared when she saw cameras. She is expected to speak at a press conference Sunday morning before the Madleen’s departure. A spokeswoman for the Freedom Flotilla would not confirm whether Thunberg will be among the 12 people setting sail on Sunday. The group expects to take seven days to get to their destination if they are not stopped.
Earlier this month, drones attacked the Conscience, another of the group’s ships carrying aid to Gaza in international waters off the coast of Malta.
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition accused Israel of attacking its ship. The group did not provide evidence for that claim or show that drones caused the fire, but in a video it shared, an explosion could be heard. Another video showed a fire blazing.
The Israeli army did not respond to a request for comment.

    10. Gabriela Benavides feeding her rooster
    11. Protesters holding a banner reading (Spanish) "No going backwards on rights."
    STORYLINE:
Animal rights groups took to the streets of Quito and 22 other cities across Ecuador to defend animal rights and demand that the National Assembly shelve the proposed LOPDA bill (Organic Law for the Protection and Defense of Animal Rights).
According to activists, the proposed bill represents a significant step backward from recent advances in protections for both urban and wild animals—rights that were established under the existing law.
Mobilizations were held in cities including Guayaquil, Cuenca, Santo Domingo, and Machala, among others.
Activist organizations argue that LOPDA undermines recent progress, including a historic 2022 ruling by the Constitutional Court of Ecuador, which recognized wild animals as rights-holding subjects deserving of protection as part of nature.
Animal rights defenders are now demanding that LOPDA be permanently shelved, and that any future legislation be aligned with the Constitutional Court's ruling and the foundational protections already established under the previous law.

"You each came here with your PDC cap, with your Cojep cap, with your MGC cap, FPI, URD, AIRD, PIP, and all the political parties, but from the moment you crossed these barriers into this place, you are the children of Côte d'Ivoire."

    6. Wide of crowd
    7. Political leaders dancing on stage
    STORYLINE:
The Ivory Coast's political opposition, an alliance of parties known as the Coalition for a Peaceful Alternation, called on Saturday for political dialogue with the ruling party, Rally of the Republicans (RDR), five months ahead of the presidential election.
Opposition leaders denounced President Alassane Ouattara's potential candidacy, as well as the exclusion of several political figures from the electoral list, including banker Tidjane Thiam, former chief executive officer (CEO) of Swiss bank Credit Suisse.
To allow the candidacy of all political leaders, the country's former First Lady, Simone Gbagbo asked President Alassane Ouattara “to take his pen to write an amnesty law that will erase everything”.
In Paris, Tidjane Thiam, president of the coalition and the PDCI, the main opposition party, projected a video onto big screens.
In the video, he said that "justice must not be instrumentalized" and called for a revision of the electoral lists before the election.
The coalition strongly criticizes the Independent Electoral Commission, considering it biased. The presidential election in Côte d'Ivoire is scheduled for October 25, 2025.
The Coalition for a Peaceful Alternation (known as CAP) in Ivory Coast was formed on March 10, 2025, to confront the presidential majority bloc.
It brings together a number of opposition figures, including former political figures such as Pascal Affi N'Guessan, Charles Blé Goudé, and former First Lady Simone Gbagbo.
Alassane Ouattara became president of Côte d'Ivoire in May 2011 following the 2010 presidential election. That election was marked by a violent post-election crisis that pitted Ouattara's supporters against those of outgoing President Laurent Gbagbo.
Since taking power, Ouattara has served three presidential terms, and his potential candidacy for a fourth term has drawn fierce criticism from the opposition.
However, his supporters argue that the new constitution, passed in 2016, resets the clock.
