"A lot of new and curious people are coming to understand what this reborn universe is, which has existed for more than 20 years, but now all of this has come to light with a lot of criticism and controversy because of adults taking care of the dolls. It’s being explored in a very superficial way, because most of those viral videos are made by people who sell dolls. So they make those videos to draw attention and attract customers. Our clients here at the nursery are mostly children.

"I learned about it on Instagram. Lots of publications and people talking about it and we decided to come today, on her birthday. Fulfilling her dream of having a reborn doll."
    12. Various of reborn baby dolls
    STORYLINE:
Videos featuring emotional moments with reborn dolls — hyperrealistic, hand-crafted baby dolls — have gone viral in Brazil, sparking both fascination and controversy. Influencers stage emotional content, such as birth simulations and strolls in shopping malls, prompting political reactions.
In Rio de Janeiro, the City Council passed in May a bill honoring reborn doll artisans, pending Mayor Eduardo Paes' signature. Meanwhile, legislators across the country have debated fines for those seeking medical help for dolls, following a viral video allegedly showing a woman taking one to a hospital.
Lawmakers have even brought the dolls into legislative chambers. On Tuesday, Joao Luiz, a state lawmaker from Amazonas, appeared with a doll at the State House to announce plans to ban reborn dolls from receiving care in the state’s public health system. However, local media reported that health authorities had never recorded any such cases.
Last week, congresswoman Talíria Petrone criticized the attention her colleagues were giving to the issue. “Can we focus on what really matters? If someone wants to have a doll, let them. I have two real children and they’re more than enough work.”
Dozens of “reborn mothers” gathered at Villa Lobos Park in Sao Paulo last Saturday for the 10th annual meet-up. Participants say criticism targets attention-seeking influencers, not the broader community.
Berenice Maria, a nursing assistant and longtime collector, owns eight reborns and says the dolls offer emotional comfort. “I love reborns, despite the hate we see out there,” she said. “I want the right to go out with them… go to the mall, go to the park.”

  • Flares and explosions seen over Gaza skyline as Israeli offensive continues

    1. Various of explosions and flares over Gaza skyline (explosions at 00:01 and 01:47)
    STORYLINE:
Blazing flares floated in the night sky above Gaza as Israeli airstrikes continued to pound the enclave Thursday evening.
It comes as the White House said Thursday that the U.S. has submitted a new Gaza ceasefire proposal that has Israeli support. Hamas officials gave the Israeli-approved draft a cool response, but said they wanted to study the proposal more closely before giving a formal answer.
President Donald Trump’s Mideast envoy had expressed optimism this week about brokering an agreement that could halt the Israel-Hamas war, allow more aid into Gaza, and return more of the 58 hostages still held by Hamas, around a third of whom are alive.
Experts say a nearly three-month Israeli blockade of Gaza — slightly eased in recent days — has pushed the population of roughly 2 million Palestinians to the brink of famine.
Israel’s war in Gaza has killed around 54,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its tally. The war began with Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Israel, which left around 1,200 dead.

    STORYLINE:
An American who was extradited from France this year to face allegations of a 2013 campus sexual assault after the accuser went public with her story hired a private lawyer to review a potential plea deal, lawyers in the case said in court Thursday.
Ian Cleary, 32, of Saratoga, California, made his first in-person court appearance in Adams County, a half-mile from where the encounter occurred at Gettysburg College.
A plea had been in the works, according to Assistant Public Defender Joshua Neiderhiser, who has represented Cleary since he was brought back to the U.S. However, after speaking with his parents, Cleary agreed to hire a lawyer to review the case, delaying a possible deal.
Shannon Keeler, in interviews with The Associated Press, described her decade-long efforts to persuade authorities to pursue charges, starting hours after Cleary, a third-year student, allegedly sneaked into her first-year dorm on the eve of winter break.
She renewed the quest in 2021, after finding a series of disturbing Facebook messages from his account that said, “So I raped you.” Keeler did not attend Thursday's hearing, but her lawyer, Andrea Levy, said she remains ready to see the case through to the end.

  • Capital Jewish Museum reopens after shooting that left two dead
    (29 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Washington DC - 29 May 2025
    1. SOUNDBITE (English) Chris Wolf, Board Chair, Capital Jewish Museum:
"Today's reopening is not simply a return to normal. It is an act of resilience. It is a declaration that we will not allow hate to silence our voices or diminish our commitment to building a better future. The memory of Yaron and Sarah will not be a cause for retreat, but rather a powerful inspiration to redouble our efforts. Their dedication to peace will fuel our resolve. Therefore, on behalf of the Board of Directors, I want to announce that we dedicate our future work to the enduring memory of Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim. In the days, weeks and months ahead, we will continue to process this tragedy and to heal as a community. We invite you to join us in this journey. Let us honor the memory of Yaron and Sarah by recommitting ourselves to the values they held dear. Values of peace, understanding, and the unwavering belief in our shared humanity."
    ++SEPARATED BY WHITE FLASH+
    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Mayor Muriel Bowser, (D) Washington DC:
"While I am saddened by the circumstances, outraged, actually,, that bring us together today. I am grateful, to look around and see the values of our city represented here and the resiliency that we heard described in getting open. So it sounds like, you know, part of my charge to my team and every difficult circumstance is that we have to get open. We have to get open. We have to get back to normal. We have to allow people to come to work. We have to allow people to grieve. We have to allow people to talk. And we have to live our missions. So thank you for getting open."
    ++SEPARATED BY WHITE FLASH+
    3. SOUNDBITE (English) Dr. Beatrice Gurwitz, Capital Jewish Museum:
"Last week's antisemitic attack cannot be our last chapter. So we reopen today, and we dedicate ourselves to honor Yaron and Sarah and their commitment to repairing the world and building bridges. And we take strength in all of you as we go forward in fulfilling that mission."

    STORYLINE:
Capital Jewish Museum in Washington DC has reopened after last week's shooting that left two dead.
"Today's reopening is not simply a return to normal. It is an act of resilience," said Board Chair Chris Wolf.
"We invite you to join us in this journey. Let us honor the memory of Yaron and Sarah by recommitting ourselves to the values they held dear. Values of peace, understanding, and the unwavering belief in our shared humanity."
Yaron Lischinsky, an Israeli citizen, and Sarah Milgrim, an American woman were a young couple about to be engaged.
The two victims were leaving an event at the Capital Jewish Museum when the suspect approached a group of four people and opened fire, Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela Smith said at a news conference.
The suspect was observed pacing outside the museum before the shooting, walked into the museum after the shooting and was detained by event security, Smith said.
When he was taken into custody, the suspect began chanting, “Free, free Palestine,” Smith said.
The violence occurred following the American Jewish Committee’s annual Young Diplomats reception at the museum.
"I believe strongly, and I have said often it is not up to the Jewish community to say, support us," said DC Mayor Muriel Bowser.
"It is up to all of us to denounce anti-Semitism in all forms."

    24. Clarksdale Civic Auditorium
    STORYLINE:
Hundreds of people packed inside the Clarksdale Civic Auditorium Thursday to see the hit film set in their community and steeped in Mississippi Delta culture. The special screening of the blockbuster horror film "Sinners" included an appearance by Director Ryan Coogler and was made possible by a community petition.
"I have family from Mississippi — my uncle, my grandfather — and I had never been until working on this script," Coogler said, addressing the crowd. "It really changed me just to come here."
"Sinners" composer Ludwig Göransson, actor Miles Canton and others who worked on the film also attended the screening.
"Anytime that filmmakers take the time out to pay homage to the Delta, especially, because we're the root of music, the blues culture, that means a lot," said Brandice Brown Williams, a theater teacher who brought two of her students to the screening.
The film is set in 1930s Clarksdale, Mississippi, but current day Clarksdale doesn't have a movie theater, making it difficult for people to see the film based in their hometown. Community organizers decided to change that, starting a petition inviting the cast and crew to Clarksdale and asking to collaborate on hosting a public screening.
During the screening, the crowd gasped, laughed and cheered.

    9. Wide of crowds of people gathering near aid distribution area, UPSOUND: gunfire
    10. Various of people carrying food supplies
    STORYLINE:
Palestinians described more scenes of chaos on Thursday at an aid distribution hub in Gaza established by a new Israeli and U.S.-backed foundation as security contractors struggled to control the crowd.
People scattered as gunfire rang out, although it was not clear who fired or if there were any casualties.
Experts say a nearly three-month Israeli blockade — slightly eased in recent days — has pushed the population of roughly 2 million Palestinians to the brink of famine.
The hubs set up by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation are guarded by private security contractors, with Israeli forces stationed nearby.
The U.N. and other humanitarian organizations have rejected the new aid system, saying it will not be able to feed Gaza’s 2.3 million people and that it lets Israel use food to control the population.
The GHF said four distribution centres are open in the enclave, including one in central Gaza.
One woman said she had waited for hours before leaving with only a small bag of lentils.
“We have no bread to feed our children. I couldn’t get a single bag of flour,” she said in tears, declining to give her name.
“I want to eat. I’m hungry," she added.

    15. Close of Portuguese coat of arms
    STORYLINE:
The Portuguese President has appointed Luis Montenegro as Prime Minister of Portugal, following the results of the recent election.
The official confirmation followed a series of meetings between Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa and leaders from the most voted parties that resulted from the 18 May ballot.
“Mr. President of the Republic has appointed me to form a government, this will be a task for the coming days," Montenegro said following his meeting.
Montenegro is leader of the Democratic Alliance (AD) and president of the Social Democratic Party (PSD).
With the final counting of the ballots from overseas voters on Wednesday, the center-right DA captured two more seats to take its tally to 88.
“I informed the President of the Republic that our understanding is that the popular will must be respected so the Socialist Party will not participate in any action that hinders the viability of the government that comes from the elections," Carlos Cesar, the President of the Socialist Party said following his meeting with de Sousa.
Portugal’s anti-immigration Chega party gained the other two, notching another political gain for Europe's far right on after it was assigned the second-most seats in parliament — it will now become the head of the parliamentary opposition to the new government.

    STORYLINE:
Palestinians in the Tulkarem refugee camp in the Israeli-occupied West Bank loaded mattresses, blankets, refrigerators, washing machines and other belongings onto vehicles on Thursday, before the planned Israeli demolition of their homes.
"Even if we want to go back to our homes, there are no homes. There isn't even infrastructure," said Ahmad Abol-faiah, a displaced resident of Tulkarem refugee camp.
The Israeli military has been carrying out an operation in the West Bank over the past several months that displaced, at its height, approximately 40,000 Palestinians.
It had emptied and largely destroyed several urban refugee camps in the northern West Bank, like Tulkarem and Nur Shams, that housed the descendants of Palestinians who fled or were driven from their homes in previous wars.
That’s the largest displacement in the West Bank since Israel captured the territory in the 1967 Mideast war.

    STORYLINE:
A judge declared Thursday that a man is mentally incompetent to stand trial on charges of stalking Jennifer Aniston and crashing his car through her front gate.
The move in a Los Angeles County mental health court came after a second psychiatrist examined the defendant, Jimmy Wayne Carwyle, and reached the same conclusion as the first: that his mental health would not allow him to answer to felony charges of vandalism and stalking of the “Friends” star.
“The court finds the defendant is not currently competent to stand trial,” Judge Maria Cavalluzzi said. “Criminal proceedings will remain suspended.”
Carwyle, 48, of Mississippi, has pleaded not guilty. He appeared behind glass in a custody area of the courtroom and did not speak. He looked vastly different than his previous two court hearings. His scraggly gray hair and beard had been shorn, and he was wearing bright yellow county jail clothing after previously appearing with bare shoulders, wrapped in a blanket-like smock meant for suicide prevention.
Carwyle had argued that he is competent, and exercised his right to a second opinion after an initial incompetence finding last week.
“It’s not the outcome my client would have preferred,” Deputy Public Defender Robert Krauss told the judge.
A conviction on the charges, along with an aggravating circumstance of the threat of great bodily harm, could bring up to three years in prison for Carwyle. The incompetence finding has no set end date but it is temporary, and the standard criminal process could resume later.
Cavalluzzi ordered more comprehensive mental evaluations to help determine where and how he’ll be held, and what his treatment will be. The judge will get a report on the results at a June 26 hearing, where Aniston or her attorney will be allowed to share her perspective on the case.
Aniston’s lawyer, Blair Berk, was in the courtroom observing Thursday, but did not speak. Berk and the deputy district attorney handling the case declined comment outside court.
Prosecutors allege Carwyle had been harassing Aniston with a flood of voicemail, email and social media messages for two years before driving his Chrysler PT Cruiser through the gate of her home in the wealthy Bel Air neighborhood of Los Angeles on May 5, causing major damage. A security guard stopped him in her driveway until police arrived. Authorities said Aniston was home at the time, but did not come into contact, and no one was injured.
Aniston became one of television’s biggest stars in her 10 years on NBC’s “Friends,” from 1994 until 2004. She won an Emmy Award for best lead actress in a comedy for the role, and she has been nominated for nine more. She currently stars in “The Morning Show” on Apple TV+.
