Hamas still holds 58 hostages, around a third of them alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements.

    4. SOUNDBITE (Russian) Dmitry Peskov, spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin:
“We can agree to set up such telephone conversation very quickly. If needed, it can happen any moment, if it's necessary for the matter. But now the main thing is to continue the process of direct Russian-Ukrainian negotiations.”
    STORYLINE:
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov refused Thursday to provide further details on what Russia’s memorandum outlined as Moscow’s conditions to end the conflict with Ukraine.
In comments to journalists he also criticized Ukrainian officials who said that Russia should give the document to Kyiv before the Kremlin’s proposed peace talks in Istanbul on June 2.
On Wednesday, Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov said his country isn't opposed to such direct peace talks but it still hasn't seen the memorandum promised by Russia and that further meetings would be “empty” without it.
“Demanding [that we hand over the memorandum] immediately is unconstructive,” Peskov said. “All that is needed at the moment is to either confirm readiness to continue negotiations or not.”
Peskov also said that there were currently no plans for Russian President Vladimir Putin to talk with U.S. President Donald Trump.
“We can agree to set up a telephone conversation very quickly if needed,” he said. “But now the main thing is to continue the process of direct Russian-Ukrainian negotiations.”

  • Beijing protests 'unreasonable' US decision to revoke visas of some Chinese students
    (29 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Beijing - 29 May 2025
    1. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning during news conference
    2. Reporters
    3. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mao Ning, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“The U.S.’s unreasonable decision to revoke Chinese students' visas under the pretext of ideology and national security seriously infringes upon the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese students and disrupts normal cultural and people-to-people exchanges between the two countries. China firmly opposes this and has lodged a protest with the U.S. Such a politicized and discriminatory action lays bare the U.S. lie that it upholds the so-called freedom and openness and will only further damage its image in the world and national reputation.”
    4. Reporter
    5. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Mao Ning, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson:
“As for China-U.S. relations, China has a consistent position. We hope the U.S. will meet us halfway and do something constructive and conducive to the sound, steady and sustainable development of China-U.S. relations.”
    6. Reporter
    7. News conference
    STORYLINE:
The Chinese government said on Thursday that it has “lodged a protest” with the U.S. over its move to revoke the visas of some Chinese students.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning told a daily news briefing the "unreasonable" decision "disrupts normal cultural and people-to-people exchanges" between the two countries.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Wednesday the U.S. will begin "aggressively" revoking the visas of some Chinese students, including those studying in "critical fields.”
Mao said such a "politicized and discriminatory" action would damage the U.S.' international reputation.
The move comes at a time of intensifying scrutiny of the ties between U.S. higher education and China.
House Republicans this month pressed Duke University to cut its ties with a Chinese university, saying it allowed Chinese students to gain access to federally funded research at Duke.

    7. Mid of Todd Chrisley and Julie Chrisley speaking to reporters
    STORYLINE:
President Donald Trump has pardoned reality TV stars Todd and Julie Chrisley three years after they were convicted of bank fraud and tax evasion.
The celebrity couple are best known for the TV series “Chrisley Knows Best.” Trump pardoned them Wednesday, paving the way for their release from separate prison facilities in Pensacola, Florida, and Lexington, Kentucky.
Federal prosecutors said at the couple's 2022 trial that the Chrisleys conspired to defraud Atlanta area banks of $30 million and tried to hide their earnings from tax authorities.
The Chrisleys' daughter, Savannah, a vocal Trump supporter, has complained the case against her parents was politically motivated. They were indicted in 2019 under a Trump-appointed U.S. attorney, Byung J. “BJay” Pak.
"I was just in such shock and in such awe that the president himself called me and took the time to let me know that my family was coming back together. And for that, I will forever be grateful that we have an administration that is reuniting families," Savannah Chrisley said as she waited for her father's release.

    15. Performers wearing costumes walking past Esquivel supporters
    STORYLINE:
Two candidates for Mexico’s Supreme Court closed their campaigns Wednesday, ahead of the country’s first judicial elections on June 1.
Lenia Batres and Yasmín Esquivel are both sitting Supreme Court justices vying to stay in office under the new system.
They are among more than 7,700 candidates competing for more than 2,600 positions at all levels of the judiciary.
Judges and court staff previously earned their positions through merit and experience.
Batres and Esquivel were nominated for the high court by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who led the push for the overhaul.
The highly popular leader was long at odds with Mexican courts, which regularly struck down reform proposals and halted projects they called an overreach of executive power.
The vote comes as power in Mexico has been increasingly concentrated in López Obrador’s popular successor and protege, Claudia Sheinbaum, and as organized crime wields significant political influence in many parts of the country.
Sheinbaum and López Obrador have asserted that by popularly electing judges, they can root out corruption in the judiciary and bring the branch closer to the people.
Critics worry that electing judges will weaken checks and balances on government and stack the courts in favor of the ruling party.
Hundreds more positions will be elected in 2027.

    STORYLINE:
Across the Nordic nations, governments are boosting defence spending, reassessing security and pushing the concept of total defence.
It’s an approach which mobilizes the whole of society to defend against military and non-military threats.
As Moscow wages war in Ukraine, Western officials are accusing Russia of being behind a campaign of sabotage, arson and cyberattacks and there are jitters across the continent about whether Europe can rely on the U.S. as a partner.
The Norwegian government published its first national security strategy in May, saying the country is facing its most serious security situation since World War Two.
Norwegian authorities posted an emergency guide to all homes to try to prepare the public for a crisis.
Norway announced in January that it plans to start building bomb shelters in new buildings after halting the practice in 1998.
Finland's civil defence shelters are the envy of the Nordics and can fit more than 85% of the Finnish population.
One public shelter in Helsinki can fit 6,000 people, is designed to withstand the fallout from a nuclear attack and is in an almost constant state of readiness with beds and sinks tucked away behind blast doors and an underground hockey pitch.
Norway and some other Nordic nations also tell residents to have enough food and water stored for seven days.
“How would you and your nearest family manage if the electricity supply was cut off for a longer period? What would you do if the water supply failed?” the Norwegian handbook asks.
