"The international order, this, in a time of imbalance, but also the return of power speeches and great intimidation, necessitates that we act together to preserve an order based on law, an essential condition for any prosperity. Indeed, while Russia continues its aggression against Ukraine, we have agreed on the importance of achieving a lasting and robust peace, with an objective that begins with the implementation of a ceasefire. But more broadly, and we also mentioned this when speaking about the South China Sea, we share the same view to defend international maritime law."

    STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron met with Vietnamese President Luong Cuong on Monday as he began a state visit to Vietnam.
The stop in Hanoi is the first on his Southeast Asia tour, which will also take him to Indonesia and Singapore to strengthen French relations in the region.
After the meeting, the leaders witnessed the exchange of more than a dozen agreements in fields including defense, nuclear power and trade.
Defense ministers Sébastien Lecornu and Phan Van Giang signed an agreement for the supply of military equipment, while Vietnam’s low-cost airline Vietjet inked a deal with Airbus to purchase 20 A330 aircraft.
Macron’s trip comes as global trade tensions escalate following a recent threat by U.S. President Donald Trump to impose a 50% tariff on European Union goods. Vietnam is also negotiating a trade agreement with the U.S. to avoid the 46% tariffs Trump announced in April.

    5. SOUNDBITE (French) Caroline Estienne, farmer:
"We've been working on this for several months to put a stop to ever increasing regulations and we've been asking for simplification. So the law was there at the right time and was very well made. But now, when we see that, of the 3,000 to 3,500 amendments have been submitted, 2,500 of them add more constraints. This is not the objective at all, and in fact, it was supposed to be a law that allowed us to produce in the same way as our neighbors in Europe."
    6. Farmers gathering around a tractor with protest banners
    7. Assemblée Nationale building
    8. SOUNDBITE (French) Caroline Estienne, farmer:
"The problem, for us, is that we do not have the necessary means of production to run our farms today in France. And we are going to import other produce from other countries that are not even necessarily in Europe, with standards that are not the same as ours. And alongside that, we are banned from using products that are used by our neighbors, so that's it. In fact, there's a misunderstanding at that level. We are prevented from producing and it seems like all the people who are against this law to scale back regulations, if you like, impeding the farming business, ultimately, what they want, is agricultural decadence."
    9. Tractors with protest signs during farmers' demonstration
    10. SOUNDBITE (French) Sylvain Bernard, FNSEA local union spokesperson:
"There are times during the year when I don't pay myself a salary. If I didn't have my wife who has a salary and income on the side, I wouldn't be able to live. It's really mind-blowing. When you work seventy to eighty hours a week and do everything you can to work - working hard isn't an issue for me. It's not a big deal, but at least we should earn something in return. So my son, who is 21, when he sees me and works with me but as an employee, when I ask him if he will take over, he tells me: 'No, are you crazy! You've seen the life you lead to earn what? I have the right to have a social life and a normal life'. So if that's what we want to offer to young people, hours and hours and hours of work to get nothing in the end..."

    STORYLINE:
A row of tractors stands outside France’s National Assembly’s main entrance. \
Over a hundred farmers are gathered.
It is a small but symbolic protest, say the farmers who turned up Monday morning to demonstrate from the provinces.
At issue : The French parliament is taking up a bill drafted in the French Senate that would actually loosen up regulations that French farmers face.
But the farmers’ unions fear MPs particularly from the Ecologist and far-left France Unbowed parties will scale back the bill with numerous amendments to address environment concerns.
The farmers say they're committed to carrying on a protest as this bill gets debated in Parliament.

    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Winston Peters, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of New Zealand:
“We discussed the growing number of New Zealand's companies working with and investing in Sri Lanka or looking to work with Sri Lankan partners. Many of these collaborations will deliver benefits for Sri Lanka in the tourism, agriculture, and healthcare sectors. We also discussed the key role (++AUDIO GLITCH++) government-to-government cooperation between our food safety and border agencies plays to improve food safety standards, reduce red tape at the border, and increase Sri Lanka’s market access capabilities."
    5. Various of the two ministers shaking hands and leaving news conference
    STORYLINE:
Debt-stricken Sri Lanka on Monday discussed with New Zealand ways to deepen bilateral ties in areas such as trade, tourism and agriculture.
The bilateral talks took place between visiting New Zealand Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters and his counterpart Vijitha Herath in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo. Peters is on a five-day visit until May 28.
His visit comes at a time when Sri Lanka is struggling to emerge from its worst economic crisis, which engulfed the Indian Ocean island nation three years ago.
Relations between the two countries have improved in recent years, with the setting up of a New Zealand Embassy in Colombo in 2021, followed by a Sri Lankan Embassy in Wellington this year.
Herath said their discussion focused on advancing ties in trade, investment, agriculture, education and tourism.
Peters said they discussed reducing red tape at the border and also to “increase Sri Lanka’s market access capabilities.”
New Zealand is a key supplier of dairy products to Sri Lanka, especially milk powder.
In 2024, New Zealand exported $335 million worth of goods to Sri Lanka, and the bulk of it was dairy products. The trade balance between the two countries is highly in favor of New Zealand, which imported only $64 million worth of goods from Sri Lanka in 2024. Main Sri Lankan exports are tea, coffee, apparel and rubber products.
Sri Lanka declared bankruptcy in April 2022 with more than $83 billion in debt, more than half of it owed to foreign creditors. It sought the help of the International Monetary Fund, which approved a $2.9 billion four-year bailout package in 2023, under which Sri Lanka was required to restructure its debt.
In September last year, Sri Lanka said it had concluded the debt restructuring process after reaching agreements with bilateral and multilateral creditors and private bondholders. Sri Lanka is seeking to obtain $17 billion in debt service relief.

    8. Various of Adityajaya showing evidence, cocaine in plastic to reporters
    9. Various of suspect being led back to prison by police officers
    STORYLINE:
Indonesian authorities arrested an Australian for allegedly smuggling cocaine on the tourist island of Bali, a charge that could carry the death penalty, officials said Monday.
The Southeast Asian country has extremely strict drug laws, and convicted smugglers are sometimes executed by firing squad.
The 43-year-old man from Sydney was arrested May 22, after police raided his rented house near Kuta beach, a popular tourist spot, and seized 1.7 kilograms (3.7 pounds) cocaine in 206 clip plastic bags, along with a digital scale and cellular phone, said Bali Police Chief Daniel Adityajaya.
The arrest followed an investigation conducted by Bali Police anti-drug surveillance teams who reported the man had received two suspicious packages sent by mail from England, Adityajaya said.
“He is suspected of importing or distributing class 1 narcotics,” Adityaja told a news conference in the provincial capital, Denpasar. “He is threatened with the death penalty or life imprisonment.”
Adityajaya said a preliminary investigation showed that the Australian had ordered a motorcycle taxi driver through the Grab online service on May 21, to pick up two packages at a post office in Denpasar.
The driver was told to hand the two packages to a motorcycle taxi driver from another online service, who was ordered to deliver them to the Australian’s rented house, Adityajaya said.
Police on Monday presented the accused at the news conference. He was wearing an orange detainee jumpsuit and a buff mask, with his hands handcuffed.
The man did not make a statement.
The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime says Indonesia is a major drug-smuggling hub despite having some of the strictest drug laws in the world, in part because international drug syndicates target its young population.
About 530 people, including 96 foreigners, are on death row in Indonesia, mostly for drug-related crimes, the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections’ data showed.
Indonesia’s last executions, of an Indonesian and three foreigners, were carried out in July 2016.

  • Daily China MOFA briefing
    (26 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    MOFA Briefing
    Spokesperson: Mao Ning
    Date: 26 May 2025
    Duration: 2 min 31 sec
    1. Premier Li Qiang paid an official visit to Indonesia. How does China view the significance of this visit?
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Indonesia, making Premier Li Qiang’s visit highly significant. Over the past 75 years, China and Indonesia have supported each other and stood together through thick and thin. Their practical cooperation has continuously reached new heights, setting a model for solidarity and mutual benefit among major developing countries. Standing at a new historical starting point, China is willing to strengthen the alignment of development strategies with Indonesia, deepen high-quality cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, enhance trade and investment facilitation, and promote closer people-to-people exchanges to better benefit the people of both countries.
This year also marks the 70th anniversary of the Bandung Conference. Against the backdrop of a complex and changing international landscape and the rise of unilateralism and protectionism, the contemporary relevance of the Bandung Spirit is even more pronounced.
China is ready to work with Indonesia and other developing countries to jointly uphold the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and the Bandung Spirit, actively implement the three major global initiatives, adhere to multilateralism and free trade, firmly safeguard the common interests of developing countries, and jointly promote world peace, stability, and development.
    2. The return date of the four giant pandas currently housed at Adventure World in Wakayama Prefecture, Japan, has been confirmed. Do you have any comments? Are there any plans to lease new giant pandas to Japan in the future?
Giant pandas living in Japan have always been deeply loved by the Japanese public. Over the years, China and Japan have achieved many positive outcomes in areas such as panda breeding, scientific research, technical exchanges, and public education.
According to the cooperation agreement signed between China and Japan, the giant panda Rauhin and her three cubs currently residing in Japan will return to China in June this year. STORYLINE:
Israeli strikes killed at least 46 people in the Gaza Strip on Monday.
Thirty-one of those killed were in a school-turned-shelter that was struck as people slept, igniting their belongings, according to local health officials. The military said it targeted militants operating from the school.
Israel renewed its offensive in March after ending a ceasefire with Hamas. It has vowed to seize control of Gaza and keep fighting until Hamas is destroyed or disarmed, and until it returns the remaining 58 hostages, a third of them believed to be alive, from the October 7, 2023, attack that ignited the war.
One woman said she and her family were taking shelter at the school and they were sleeping when they woke up in a pile of rubble, not knowing who was crushed in the debris on top of them.
Israel says it plans to seize full control of Gaza and facilitate what it describes as the voluntary migration of its over 2 million population, a plan rejected by Palestinians and much of the international community.
Israel's military campaign has destroyed vast areas of Gaza and internally displaced some 90% of its population. Many have fled multiple times.

The 46th ASEAN summit kicked off on Monday in Kuala Lumpur with opening remarks from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Southeast Asian nations will forge a common front to face challenges including economic headwinds from U.S. arbitrary tariffs and the four-year deadly civil war in Myanmar, in which fragile progress has been made, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Monday.
Opening an annual summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations of which Malaysia is the current chair, Anwar said he has written to seek a bloc meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump on the tariffs. Officials are hopeful it could happen later this year.
“I strongly believe in the fortitude and staying power of ASEAN to withstand the hits and weather the storm and the challenges and uncertainties facing us," he said.
