STORYLINE:

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Athens on Thursday to protest against the war in Gaza.

People held placards, waved flags and chanted slogans as they called for an end to the conflict and more aid to be allowed into the enclave.

The demonstration was organised by trade unions affiliated with the country's communist party.

Protesters dispersed peacefully at the end of the rally.

The protest comes U.S. President Donald Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff arrived in Israel on Thursday to discuss the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, as the death toll of Palestinians waiting for food and other aid continued to climb.

Witkoff and U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee will inspect food distribution in Gaza on Friday, the White House said.

The war started when Hamas attacked southern Israel on October. 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people and abducting 251 others.

They still hold 50 hostages, including around 20 believed to be alive. Most of the others have been released in ceasefires or other deals.

Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed more than 60,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. Its count doesn’t distinguish between militants and civilians.

The ministry operates under the Hamas government. The U.N. and other international organizations see it as the most reliable source of data on casualties.

STORYLINE:

Workers of a company extending the gas network in the outskirts of Lima, Peru, found ancient human remains and a funerary trousseau, which was cleaned and inspected by an archaeologist on Thursday.

The Calidda Natural Gas company workers closed the area for archaeologists to inspect the site and halted their work in that section of the street.

Jose Pablo Aliaga, an archaeologist hired by the Calidda Natural Gas company, described what he had found after a week working in the area.

Aliaga believes it a thousand-year-old burial site belonging to the Chancay culture, which inhabited these desertic seaside hills nearly a millennium ago.

This pre-Inca culture settled in the northern part of Lima, extending from the Huaura to the Chillon valleys.

Aliaga found two tombs built with adobe bricks, one of which was empty, while the other contained canes made from the local huarango tree, four clay pots, and three gourd cups.

The cups and pots were painted in red, white and black dyes, which Aliaga said were common among the Chancay.

Despite being two tombs, only one set of human remains was found.

Aliaga said this could be a lead for an ancient cemetery hidden behind the urban sprawl.

"I was shocked to learn that there are human remains from the ancient Inca times just at the same place where my children walk," said Flor Prieto, a local resident who brought her daughter to the archaeological excavation.

Lima was one of the cradles for ancient civilizations in the Americas, some of which have inhabited the area for over 3,000 years.

Nearly all excavations render a discovery, which is always impressive and a source of pride for the residents.

The city is dotted with more than 400 declared archaeological sites.

STORYLINE:

Thousands watched a military parade in Croatia Thursday marking 30 years since a key war victory, as the country seeks to further boost its armed forces with the help from a new European Union defense fund.

German-made Leopard 2A6 battle tanks, French-made Rafale jets and Turkish-made Bayraktar combat drones were among the main attractions at the show in the capital Zagreb. Some 3,400 army personnel, police units, mountain rescue teams, firefighters and war veterans marched in a display of national unity.

"Let’s support the victorious Croatian army and all those who will take part in the parade, especially the Croatian defenders to whom we owe our freedom and independent Croatia," Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said on social media.

Back in August 1995, Croatia recaptured lands that had been held by minority Serbs since their rebellion in 1991 against Croatia’s independence from the former Yugoslavia. The Operation Storm offensive presented a turning point in the war which also triggered a mass exodus of ethnic Serbs from Croatia.

Tensions with Balkan rival Serbia - which backed the ethnic Serb rebellion in Croatia - have simmered ever since the 1990s’ war. Serbia holds parallel ceremonies each August, mourning the Serb victims of the Croatian offensive. Belgrade has cautioned Serbian citizens against traveling to Croatia during the anniversary ceremonies through August 10.

Serbia too has purchased the Rafale planes from France, but has also bought a sophisticated Chinese anti-aircraft system. The country is set to present its military force at a parade planned for September.

Croatia is among eighteen EU countries that have applied for billions of euros from a new defense fund of cheap loans accessible to member countries. Plenkovic said Croatia could seek 1,8 billion euros ($2 billion) from the fund.

The 150-billion-euro ($173 billion) Security Action for Europe (SAFE) program was launched after the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump signalled that Europe is no longer a U.S. security priority.

Croatia joined the EU in 2013, four years after becoming a member of NATO. U.S. allies in Europe are convinced that President Vladimir Putin could target one of them if Russia wins its war on Ukraine.

STORYLINE:

Relatives of more than 50 people who died from contaminated fentanyl supplied to Argentina's hospital system protested outside the Italian Hospital in La Plata on Thursday, a city in Buenos Aires province, 60 kilometers south of the capital.

The relatives criticized that, after three months of investigation, the justice system has yet to formally press charges against those responsible for distributing the adulterated analgesic.

The federal court in La Plata, which is leading the current investigation, is looking into up to 100 suspicious deaths, 54 of which have been confirmed by independent experts provided by the families.

In early May, Argentina's Ministry of Health detected an infection from fentanyl contaminated with K. pneumoniae type MB and Ralstonia spp. bacteria in patients who had died or were in serious condition in hospitals in several provinces.

Health authorities determined that local firms, HLB Pharma Group and Ramallo Laboratories, had distributed the contaminated fentanyl and ordered the withdrawal of the contaminated batches from the market.

Additionally, they suspended the activities of both firms.

The justice system then ordered numerous raids on laboratories and drugstores, but so far, no one has been charged in connection with the events.

Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid primarily imported from China. It's used as an analgesic to control severe pain in patients in areas like intensive care or operating rooms.

Considered 50 times stronger than heroin, its recreational use is highly addictive and has proliferated across the continent.

Jose Pablo Aliaga, an archaeologist hired by the Calidda Natural Gas company, described what he had found after a week working in the area.

Aliaga believes it a thousand-year-old burial site belonging to the Chancay culture, which inhabited these desertic seaside hills nearly a millennium ago.

This pre-Inca culture settled in the northern part of Lima, extending from the Huaura to the Chillon valleys.

Aliaga found two tombs built with adobe bricks, one of which was empty, while the other contained canes made from the local huarango tree, four clay pots, and three gourd cups.

The cups and pots were painted in red, white and black dyes, which Aliaga said were common among the Chancay.

Despite being two tombs, only one set of human remains was found.

Aliaga said this could be a lead for an ancient cemetery hidden behind the urban sprawl.

STORYLINE:

Strong rain storms lashed the East Coast Thursday, delaying flights throughout the region and prompting emergency rescues of motorists trapped in deep water on busy highways from the Philadelphia area to New York City.

In New York, flash flooding briefly closed sections of major roadways across the city just as the evening rush hour approached, and the commuter rail system into suburban Long Island suspended service on one of its busiest lines.

Airports in New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia all reported significant flight delays and cancellations.

Forecasters said the strongest storms were expected later Thursday afternoon and night. The National Weather Service said heavy to excessive rainfall and potentially severe thunderstorms were expected along the Washington-Philadelphia-New York City corridor. Some areas in the southern part of the region could see rainfall rates of 2 inches (5 centimeters) per hour, the service said.
