    STORYLINE:
Israeli strikes overnight and into Tuesday have killed at least 60 people across the Gaza Strip, according to Palestinian health officials.
Israel has launched another major offensive in the territory in recent days, saying it aims to return dozens of hostages held by Hamas and destroy the militant group.
"The plane came and bombed them, cutting them into pieces. Not one body is complete, not one," said Mohammad Abu Mosabbah, who lost his relatives.
In the latest strikes, two in northern Gaza hit a family home and a school-turned-shelter, killing at least 22 people, more than half of them women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry.
A strike in the central city of Deir al-Balah killed 13 people, and another in the nearby built-up Nuseirat refugee camp killed 15, according to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital.
Two strikes in the southern city of Khan Younis killed 10 people, according to Nasser Hospital.
The war in Gaza began when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting 251 others.
The militants are still holding 58 captives, around a third believed to be alive, after most of the rest were returned in ceasefire agreements or other deals.
Israel’s retaliatory offensive, which has destroyed large swaths of Gaza, has killed more than 53,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which doesn’t differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count.

  • Desperate residents struggle to receive donated food at a community kitchen in Jabaliya
    (20 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
Jabaliya, northern Gaza Strip - 19 May 2025
    1. Various STILLS of Palestinians, including children, struggling to get donated food at a community kitchen
    2. Various STILLS of Palestinians, including children and women, queuing for donated food
    STORYLINE:
Desperate Palestinians crowded a community kitchen in Jabaliya refugee camp on Monday to receive donated food.
Women and children were seen queuing to receive cooked food, as the first few aid trucks entered Gaza following nearly three months of Israel’s blockade of food, medicine and other supplies, Israel and the United Nations said.
Five trucks carrying baby food and other desperately needed aid entered the territory of over 2 million Palestinians via the Kerem Shalom crossing, according to the Israeli defense body in charge of coordinating aid to Gaza, COGAT.
The blockade prompted warnings from food experts of a risk of famine.
Criticism of Israel's conduct intensified Monday when allies Canada, France and the United Kingdom threatened "concrete actions” against the country, including sanctions, and called on Israel to stop its “egregious” new military actions in Gaza.
Netanyahu rejected the criticism, saying it was “a huge prize” for Hamas' Oct. 7, 2023, attack that would invite more such violence.
So far, just a handful of trucks have been sent into Gaza, which U.N. agencies say is nowhere near enough to meet the massive need.
Some 600 trucks a day had entered during a ceasefire earlier this year.

  • Daily MOFA briefing
    (20 May 2025)
    Spokesperson: Mao Ning
    Date: 20 May 2025
    Duration: 3 min 46 sec
    STORYLINE:
    1. China has announced that Foreign Minister Wang Yi will attend the signing ceremony of the Convention on the Establishment of the International Mediation Court. Could you provide further details on the arrangements and China’s considerations in promoting the establishment of the International Mediation Court?
In 2022, China, together with nearly 20 like-minded countries, jointly initiated the establishment of the International Mediation Court. Through joint efforts, negotiations on the Convention on the Establishment of the International Mediation Court have been completed, and it has been unanimously agreed that the headquarters of the Court will be located in Hong Kong, China.
Nearly 60 countries from Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Europe, as well as about 20 international organizations, including the United Nations, will send high-level representatives to attend the signing ceremony on May 30. An International Mediation Forum will be held that afternoon, focusing on discussions around inter-state dispute mediation and international investment and commercial dispute mediation.”
Mediation is one of the important means of dispute resolution stipulated in the UN Charter. It values harmony, fully respects the will of the parties involved, and has unique advantages such as greater flexibility, lower cost, convenience, and easier enforcement. It also reflects the Eastern tradition of harmony. The International Mediation Court, with a focus on resolving disputes through mediation, will become the world’s first intergovernmental legal organization dedicated to resolving international disputes through mediation. It is an important mechanism for upholding the purposes and principles of the UN Charter.
The International Mediation Court responds to the shared concerns of all countries for peace, stability, and development. It aligns with the prevailing trend of win-win cooperation, integrates the strengths of major legal systems, and is conducive to promoting global governance in the rule of law toward a more just and reasonable direction.
We welcome more countries to actively support and participate in the establishment of the International Mediation Court. By complementing and enhancing the effectiveness of existing international dispute resolution mechanisms, we can jointly provide more options and avenues for the efficient and peaceful resolution of international disputes and better uphold international fairness and justice.
    2. Russian President Putin and U.S. President Trump had a phone call yesterday to discuss the Russia-Ukraine issue. What is China’s comment?
We noted the reports. China supports all efforts conducive to peace, supports direct dialogue and negotiations between Russia and Ukraine, and supports a political resolution to the crisis. We hope all parties can reach a fair, lasting, and binding peace agreement that is acceptable to all parties through dialogue and negotiation.
    3. Recently, the 2025 White Paper on the Development of China’s Satellite Navigation and Positioning Service Industry was released in Beijing, which mentioned the rapid development of China’s satellite navigation and positioning service industry in recent years, especially the BeiDou system. Some foreign media have commented that the BeiDou system is challenging the global status of the U.S. GPS system. What is China’s response?
    4. China’s Defence Minister Dong Jun is reportedly not expected to attend the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore next week. Do you have any information?

  • Shares in China's CATL, world's biggest EV battery maker, surge in HKong after $4.6 billion IPO
    (20 May 2025)
    RESTRICTION SUMMARY:
    ASSOCIATED PRESS
    Hong Kong - 20 May 2025

    4. SOUNDBITE (Mandarin) Robin Zeng, Chairman and CEO, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co:
“This listing signifies our deeper integration into the global capital markets and marks a new milestone in our mission to drive the global zero-carbon economy. CATL is more than just a battery parts manufacturer, it is also a provider of system solutions and is committed to be a zero-carbon company.”
    5. Various of guests toasting at the ceremony
    STORYLINE:
Shares in the world’s largest maker of batteries for electric vehicles, CATL, jumped about 13% Tuesday in its Hong Kong trading debut after it raised about $4.6 billion in the world’s largest initial public offering this year.
The solid reception for the Chinese company, Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., in Hong Kong suggests there is still an appetite among international investors for leading Chinese manufacturers despite trade tensions between Beijing and Washington.
It sold over 135 million shares at their maximum offer price, 263 Hong Kong dollars ($33.60 USD) each.
Its shares rose after it started trading at 296 Hong Kong dollars ($37.80), 12.5% higher than the offer price. They were up about 13% by midday.
CATL also has shares listed in Shenzhen, a business hub neighboring Hong Kong. They initially fell but then edged 0.1% higher Tuesday.
CATL held a nearly 38% global market share for electric vehicle batteries in 2024, its listing documents showed. It supplies automakers like Tesla, Volkswagen, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Ford, Toyota and Honda.
In January, the U.S. Defense Department added it to a list of companies it says have ties to China’s military, an accusation that CATL denied. It called the inclusion a “mistake.”

    2. SOUNDBITE (English) Christian Warrer, organizer, Hundested Sand Sculpture Festival:
"This year, we wanted to make something funny. There is so much going on in the world that is not to laugh about. And in the end, it turned out very strange because when you think about 'Showtime', it's obviously what you think. But the way, the carvers, the artists, actually found out what to do is... you will see it's strange things, some of it. But it all fits into the theme, in one way or another."

    4. SOUNDBITE (English) Michela Ciappini, Italian sand sculptor:
"I imagine that now the very important person is the old generation who represent their entire life and actually our roots. So, I give them the dance and the freedom and the attention. They stick out from the pictures that we have about them on our draw on the shelves. But now they are important and alive and they dance freely, happy."
    5. Various of Ciappini working on her sculpture
    6. SOUNDBITE (English) Nicola Wood, British sand sculptor:
"I've made two sculptures here. The second one, which is behind me, is based on a circus strongman. So, I didn't want to be too literal. I've done it quite Picasso-esque. So, I've just taken all the elements of a strong man, a woman, and pieced them all back together in a Picasso style, using his iconic parts. So, the weights, the strong arm, the bit of leopard print, some circus stripes, some circus lettering, that kind of thing."
    7. Various of Wood working on her sculpture, sculpture details
    STORYLINE:
Charlie Chaplain, Miss Piggy, grand opera spectacles and circus clowns - countless Showtime-inspired sand sculptures are emerging from the sand at Hundested Sand Sculpture Festival in northeast Denmark.
Launched in 2012 as a creative way to put the small seaside town of 8,000 on the tourist map, Hundested Sand Sculpture Festival is now in its fourteenth year.
Organizer Christian Warrer says with so much going on in the world that is "not to laugh about," they chose to explore a "funny" theme like Showtime:
“In the end, it turned out very strange because when you think about Showtime, it's obviously what you think. But the way, the carvers, the artists, actually found out what to do is... you will see it's strange things, some of it,” he says.
“But it all fits into the theme, in one way or another."
The sculptors have just days to complete their sandy masterpieces, but the festival runs till late October, so durability is key.
That means these gravity-defying creations must be made of stronger stuff than the average sandcastle.
A small amount of clay makes the sculptures strong enough to withstand rain.
But not frost, by autumn, they’ll begin to collapse. The festival then re-uses its sand each year.
The annual event, which opens to visitors on Friday (23 May), attracts every year an array of top international sand sculptors, from Belgium, Canada, Netherlands, Italy, Latvia, the UK, the United States and more.
Sixteen international artists are attending this year, most crafting two sculptures over the course of a fortnight.
Italian sand sculptor Michela Ciappini, from Bologna, is finishing this graceful figure of an elderly woman mid-dance.
"I imagine that now the very important person is the old generation who represent their entire life and actually our roots. So, I give them the dance and the freedom and the attention,” explains Ciappini.

Addressing growing tensions with China, Lai reaffirmed Taiwan’s willingness to seek peaceful engagement.
“We aim to replace blockade with dialogue, and to replace confrontation with conversation, moving towards a direction of peaceful coexistence and mutual prosperity," he said.
Lai stressed the importance of national security, pledging to continue strengthening Taiwan’s defense through both international military procurement and domestic innovation.

Israel says it doesn't want a “starvation crisis” jeopardizing its new military offensive in the territory of over 2 million Palestinians.
The first aid trucks entered Gaza on Monday following nearly three months of Israel’s complete blockade, according to the Israeli defense body in charge of coordinating aid to Gaza.
Five trucks carrying aid including baby food entered the territory via the Kerem Shalom crossing.
Global experts had warned of famine in Gaza as a result of the Israeli blockade.
Israel cut off all food, medicine and other supplies to the territory to pressure Hamas over ceasefire terms.
The war in Gaza began on Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas-led militants attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and abducting 251 others.
Israel’s retaliatory offensive has killed more than 53,000 Palestinians, many of them women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which doesn’t differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count.
