"This doctrine has now been formally established, that if there is an act of terror committed by Pakistan, and we have reasonable evidence to believe that it's been masterminded from Pakistan, then India will exercise its right to strike at bases inside Pakistan, and it will not be deterred by Pakistan's nuclear threat. So the bluff of Pakistan's nuclear blackmail has been, if not called off, certainly set in abeyance."

So one hopes that as time passes, he will acquaint himself with these factors under the developments."

    STORYLINE:
An Indian author and former diplomat said Monday that India has now "formally established" a policy to respond militarily "if there is an act of terror committed by Pakistan," even under the threat of nuclear escalation.
If "we have reasonable evidence to believe that it's been masterminded from Pakistan, then India will exercise its right to strike at bases inside Pakistan, and it will not be deterred by Pakistan's nuclear threat," said Dilip Sinha, speaking via a video call from New Delhi.
His comments come after India and Pakistan reached an understanding to stop all military actions on land, in the air and at the sea on Saturday in a U.S.-brokered ceasefire to stop the escalating hostilities between the two nuclear-armed rivals that threatened regional peace.
However, Sinha criticized the Trump administration for not knowing "the background of the case and what has happened in the past."
"The very fact that President Trump talked about this war having going on for a thousand years shows that he really has very little knowledge of India-Pakistan relations and of the issues involved in Kashmir," he said.
Senior military officials from India and Pakistan are scheduled to speak later Monday to assess if ceasefire was holding.
There were fears it would not hold after they accused each other of violations just hours after it was announced.

    VOICEOVER:
For more than two decades, Sean “Diddy” Combs was one of hip-hop's most successful entrepreneurs, spinning his hitmaking talents into an empire that included a record label, a fashion brand, a TV network, deals with liquor companies and a key role in a reality TV show.
But U.S. prosecutors say Combs was coercing and abusing women with assistance from a network of associates who helped silence victims through blackmail and violence.
In November 2023, R&B singer Cassie sued Combs, alleging he subjected her to years of abuse, including beatings and rape. A day later, the lawsuit was settled with Combs, through his attorney, denying the accusations.
In the same month, dozens of additional lawsuits followed from women and men who accused Combs of rape, sexual assault and other attacks.
In March of 2024, federal agents searched Combs' homes in Los Angeles and Miami Beach, and - in September - Combs was arrested at his Manhattan hotel. A sex trafficking and racketeering indictment accuses him of using his business empire to coerce women into participating in sexual performances.
Combs has pleaded not guilty and denied all allegations. Opening statements in his trial are expected Monday..

    STORYLINE:
Pope Leo XIV on Monday called for the release of imprisoned journalists and affirmed the “precious gift of free speech and the press” in an audience with some of the 6,000 journalists who descended on Rome to cover his election as the first American pontiff.
Leo received a standing ovation as he entered the Vatican auditorium for his first meeting with representatives of the general public.
The 69-year-old Augustinian missionary, elected in a 24-hour conclave last week, called for journalists to use words for peace, to reject war and to give voice to the voiceless.
Leo opened the meeting with a few words in English, joking that if the crowd was still awake and applauding at the end, it mattered more than the ovation that greeted him.
Turning to Italian, he thanked the journalists for their work covering the papal transition and urged them to use words of peace.
After his brief speech, in which he reflected on the power of words to do good, he greeted some of the journalists in the front rows and then shook hands with the crowd as he exited the audience hall down the central aisle. He signed a few autographs and posed for a few selfies.
Journalists later shared some of the few words they exchanged with him, including hints that Vatican plans are going ahead for Leo to travel to Turkey to commemorate an important event in Catholic-Orthodox relations: the 1700th anniversary of the Council of Nicea, Christianity’s first ecumenical council.
Other tidbits emerged: Journalists offered to play doubles in tennis, or to organize a charity match. Leo, a regular tennis player, seemed game “but we can’t invite Sinner,” he joked, referring to the world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, who is playing just up the Tiber at the Italian Open.
It was in the 2013 audience with journalists who covered the election of history’s first Latin American pope that Pope Francis explained his choice of name, after St. Francis of Assisi, and his desire for a “church which is poor and for the poor!”
During his 12-year pontificate, Francis too spoke about the value of journalism and as recently as January, he appealed for the release of imprisoned journalists during a Holy Year event with the media.

  • Israeli strike on school-turned-shelter in Gaza kills at least 16 people, mostly women and children

    3. Various of people praying for victims
    STORYLINE:
An Israeli strike on a school-turned-shelter in the Gaza Strip killed at least 16 people early on Monday, mostly women and children, according to local health officials.
At least five children and four women were among those killed in the strike on a school in the Jabaliya area, the Gaza Health Ministry’s emergency service said.
It also said that a number of people were wounded.
The Israeli military says it only targets militants and blames civilian deaths on Hamas because its fighters operate in densely populated areas.
There was no immediate comment on the latest strike.
"We can’t take this anymore; we cannot bear all this injustice," said Khader Juneid, a displaced man who was taking shelter in the school.
The attack came as U.S. President Donald Trump is heading to Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates this week.
After ending a ceasefire two months ago, Israel is intensifying the war in the Gaza Strip, where its 10-week blockade on food, medicine and other supplies is worsening a humanitarian crisis.

    6. Various Gérard Depardieu at court on third day of sexual assault trial
    VOICEOVER:
A decision in the trial of Gérard Depardieu on sexual assault charges is expected Tuesday.
The actor - a towering figure in French cinema for over half a century - was in court in March, accused of sexually assaulting two women on a movie set
A bon vivant who overcame a speech impediment and a turbulent youth, Depardieu rose to fame in the 1970s and became one of France’s most prolific and acclaimed actors.
In recent years, the actor's career has been overshadowed by multiple allegations of misconduct. He has been accused by more than 20 women, but so far only a sexual assault case has proceeded to court. Some others were dropped because of a lack of evidence or the statute of limitations.
The four day trial considered accusations the actor groped a 54-year-old set dresser and a 34-year-old assistant during filming in 2021 of “Les Volets Verts.”
The Paris public prosecutor has requested an 18-month suspended prison sentence.

“Obviously we are affected by the ongoing trade talks, because shipments, Hong Kong is regarded by the US as part of China for customs purposes, that that separate recognition was withdrawn by the US after the NSL took effect. And so all of our exports, which are mostly re-exports from China anyway, are tariffed, so that's going to affect the level of trade, but hopefully, in the very near future, that would be a clam down. If you look at what Trump is doing, he's blinking, he's walking, is stepping things down and claiming victories.”

    STORYLINE:
The US-China trade war is affecting Hong Kong trade, veteran Hong Kong market analyst David Webb said Monday and if things don’t cool down, the US could order asset managers to dump Hong Kong-Chinese stock.

(Reporter: "What's it like to be here when you get the invitation to this event? Do you still get excited?")
Diddy: "Oh yeah, I mean you have to get excited. Fashion's best coming out for a night for one night of fun. One of the most grueling industries to work in is fashion, because you have to work every day. The trends change every day. So this is a night for us to let loose and kind of celebrate our creativity."

    STORYLINE:
Federal prosecutors will begin trying to prove Monday that Sean “Diddy” Combs turned his hip-hop conglomerate into a racketeering enterprise that forced women to satisfy his sexual desires for two decades.
Testimony in Combs' New York trial could begin as soon as the afternoon following a final phase of jury selection in the morning and opening statements from the lawyers.
Combs, 55, has pleaded not guilty to a five-count indictment that could land him in prison for at least 15 years if he is convicted on all charges. He has been imprisoned at a federal jail in Brooklyn since his arrest in September.
Lawyers for the three-time Grammy winner say prosecutors are wrongly trying to make a crime out of a party-loving lifestyle that may have been indulgent, but was not illegal.
Prosecutors say Combs coerced women into drugged-up group sexual encounters, then kept them in line through violence. He is accused of choking, hitting, kicking and dragging women, often by the hair.
Combs' former girlfriend, the R&B singer Cassie, is expected to be among the trial’s early witnesses.
She filed a lawsuit in 2023 saying Combs had subjected her to years of abuse, including beatings and rape. The lawsuit was settled within hours of its filing, but it touched off a law enforcement investigation and was followed by dozens of lawsuits from people making similar claims.
Prosecutors plan to show jurors video a security camera video of Combs beating Cassie in the hallway of a Los Angeles hotel in 2016.
Jurors may also see recordings of events called “Freak Offs,” where prosecutors say women had sex with male sex workers while Combs filmed them. The indictment said the events sometimes lasted days and participants required IV-drips to recover.
Combs’ attorney, Marc Agnifilo, has said that the Bad Boy Records founder was “not a perfect person” and was undergoing therapy, including for drug use, before his arrest.
But he and other lawyers for Combs have argued that any group sex was consensual and any violence was an aberration.
After the video of Combs assaulting Cassie in the hotel aired on CNN last year, Combs apologized and said he took “full responsibility” for his actions. "I was disgusted then when I did it. I’m disgusted now.”
The Associated Press doesn’t generally identify people who say they are victims of sexual abuse unless they come forward publicly, as Cassie, whose legal name is Casandra Ventura, has done.
