New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani attended an event in honor of slain 32BJ SEIU Security Officer Aland Etienne on Wednesday .

Mamdani, who just returned from a trip to Uganda, visited the victim's family before speaking at the press conference where he called for "stronger gun laws."

Family and friends of the victims, meanwhile, continued to express their grief and remember their loved ones.

Killed in the attack were New York City police officer Didarul Islam, who was guarding the building on a paid security job; unarmed security guard Aland Etienne, who helped control access to the upper floors; Wesley LePatner, a real estate executive at the investment firm Blackstone, which occupies much of the building; and Julia Hyman, an associate at Rudin Management.

An NFL employee who was badly wounded in the attack is expected to live.

A funeral for Hyman, 27, was held at Central Synagogue in midtown Manhattan on Wednesday, with her burial following on Long Island.

Islam's funeral is scheduled for Thursday.

Over a hundred people protested against a law that they say weakens Ukraine’s anti-corruption watchdogs, a day before the government is due to vote on restoring their powers.

On Thursday the parliament is expected to vote on a new bill that should restore the independence of anti-corruption agencies following President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's approval last week of one that curtailed that independence and lead to protests across Ukraine.

Last week, thousands of people gathered in the capital and other cities to urge Zelenskyy to veto the controversial bill.

After he approved it, activists went on social media to call for another demonstration Wednesday night in central Kyiv.

"I am here to remind the authorities that public interest in this issue has not disappeared and that we really need to vote," said 30-year-old protester Anastasia Usachova.

The previous bill was seen as undermining the agencies’ independence and sparked a public outcry and protests, the first major demonstrations since the war began, as well as sharp criticism from the European Union.

Zelenskyy said parliament would review the new bill, which “guarantees real strengthening of Ukraine’s law enforcement system, the independence of anti-corruption bodies, and reliable protection of the legal system from any Russian interference.

STORYLINE:

A city councilmember in Virginia was set on fire by a man who entered a local magazine office, police said Wednesday.

Investigators believe the attack stemmed from a “personal matter” and was unrelated to his politics or work as councilman, authorities said.

Lee Vogler, 38, is an elected official in Danville, Virginia.

Police say the suspect entered Vogler’s office, where he works at a local magazine, confronted him and doused him in flammable liquid. Both men then left the building and the 29-year-old suspect set Vogler on fire, police said.

His condition wasn’t immediately known. The suspect, Shotsie Michael Buck Hayes of Danville, was in police custody. Police said charges were pending, and it wasn’t immediately known whether Hayes had a lawyer who could comment.

The attack occurred at the office of Showcase Magazine, a monthly publication on southwest Virginia and North Carolina, magazine owner and publisher Andrew Brooks said.

Vogler has served on the Danville City council for more than 12 years and is currently serving his 4th term. He’s married with two children. Vogler is a managing partner at the Andrew Brooks Media Group, a marketing firm that publishes several regional magazines and operates a branded merchandise website and a music publishing company, according to its website.

He graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2010 and returned to his hometown to run for office. He formed a group in 2010 called Moving Danville Forward, to come up with ideas to revitalize the city.

Danville is about 140 miles (227 kilometers) north of Charlotte, North Carolina.

Streams of people carrying flour bags on their backs were seen returning through the Zikim crossing between Gaza and Israel Wednesday evening.

It comes as at least 48 Palestinians were killed and dozens were wounded on Wednesday while waiting for food at the crossing in the Gaza Strip, according to a local hospital that received the casualties.

The latest violence around aid distribution came as the U.S. Mideast envoy was heading to Israel for talks.

Shifa Hospital in Gaza City said the dead and wounded were among crowds gathered at the Zikim Crossing, the main entry point for humanitarian aid to northern Gaza.

It was not immediately clear who opened fire and there was no immediate comment from the Israeli military, which controls the crossing.

Israel's ongoing military offensive and blockade have led to the “worst-case scenario of famine” in the coastal territory of some 2 million Palestinians, according to the leading international authority on hunger crises.

A breakdown of law and order has seen aid convoys overwhelmed by desperate crowds.

“The situation is bad but thank God I was able to get it. We bring food at risk of our own blood. There is death, shooting, and the situation is extremely bad," said Abu Muhammed, a father of six while carrying a 50-kg bag of flour on his shoulders.
