STORYLINE:

Thai families that were displaced by the border clashes with Cambodia have returned home, a day after a ceasefire was announced.

Unloading their car of the belongings, Jirayu Jindasri and his family were greeted by their excited dog, happy to see them after several days.

Jindasri evacuated with his family on Friday evening to stay with their relatives about 80 km (50 miles) away.

They returned to the village Tuesday morning with few belongings they grabbed before they fled.

The family unloaded their things and started cleaning the house as soon as they arrived.

Jirayu said he was very worried about his home while he was away, but everything looked like it was in place.

"I still don't feel comfortable, because they just announced it for the first day. I'm not confident. If it breaks out again, I'll have to go," he said.

His brother, Kritsada Jindasri, chief of a village in Surin, at around 15 km (9 miles) away from the border, said he and about 60 other community leaders stayed behind to take care of the belongings of around 400 residents who evacuated.

He heard heavy firing and explosions moments before the ceasefire agreement supposedly took place, and everything fell into silence at midnight.

"We still don't totally believe (that it would stop). We still wait to assess the situation," he said, adding that his village has not been affected by the border clashes.

STORYLINE:

Hundreds in Beirut Monday paid tribute to iconic composer, pianist, and playwright Ziad Rahbani, who will be laid to rest.

His mother Fayrouz, 90, considered one of the most esteemed singers of the Arab world, made a rare public appearance at a church where she received mourners offering their condolences.

Rahbani, also known as a political provocateur died on Saturday at the age of 69. The reasons of death were not immediately known.

His passing shocked Lebanon and much of the Arab world who appreciated his witty satire, unapologetic political critique, and avante-garde jazz-inspired compositions that mirrored the chaos and contradictions of Lebanon throughout its civil war from 1975 until 1990.

He also composed some of the most famous songs for Fayrouz.

"I believe that the scale of today's loss for the entire country is extremely, extremely large," said actor Ziad Itani. "We feel a loss on a personal level."

Rahbani, a leftist Greek Orthodox, often mocked the sectarian divisions of Lebanon in his work inspired by his violent environment.

The Rahbani family were a cornerstone in Lebanon's golden era of music theater that is today steeped in idealism and nostalgia in a troubled country that appears destined to be mired in crisis after crisis.

Top Lebanese political officials and artists paid tribute moments after his death was announced.

Hundreds of people holding roses and photos of Rahbani gathered by the Khoury Hospital near Beirut's busy Hamra district, solemnly singing some of his most famous tunes and applauding as a black vehicle carrying his body exited the hospital's garage.

STORYLINE:

A Cambodian family returned to its home on Tuesday after a ceasefire agreement was reached with Thailand Monday at a meeting in Malaysia to an unconditional halt in fighting.

But the Thai army accused Cambodia of breaching a ceasefire deal to resolve the deadly border dispute early on Tuesday morning.

The ceasefire came after five days of border clashes that killed dozens and displaced tens of thousands.

Soklang Sareoun returned to her home with her husband and father while being welcomed by her dogs on Tuesday.

She fled her home in Prasat Rorobeuk Village in Oddar Meanchey for a resettlement camp on the second day of clashes on July 25.

When fighting broke out the day before, the family dug a bunker to safeguard themselves from artillery. But with the intensity of the bombings, they decided to evacuate.

But while she returned home, she is still cautious.

Her father Soklang Slay lives next door and was helping her move back home, though he said he shared the sentiment.

Military commanders from both sides are scheduled to meet Tuesday. Signs of calm have returned to some areas, with some other families also beginning to return home.

Soldiers and civilians gathered in Kyiv’s Independence Square on Monday to commemorate the third anniversary of an explosion that killed 53 Ukrainians held by Russia in the Olenivka prison barracks in occupied Donetsk region.

In 2025, the UN confirmed Russia’s responsibility for the Olenivka prisoner massacre of Ukrainian POWs.

The event in the center of Kyiv drew many families, including the mothers, wives and children of soldiers who were killed at Olenivka or who are currently imprisoned by Russia.

Tetiana Vyshniak is waiting for her son Artem, who was captured in Mariupol, for 38 and a half months and was convicted by a Russian court.

"They protected us, now we must protect them and bring them home," she told The Associated Press.

A shooting at a midtown Manhattan office building on Monday left at least five people dead, including an off-duty New York City police officer, and the gunman is also dead, officials said.

Another man was seriously injured and remains in critical condition, Mayor Eric Adams said.

The officer who was killed was a 36-year-old.

He was an immigrant from Bangladesh and had served as a police officer in New York City for 3 1/2 years.

"He was saving lives. He was protecting New Yorkers. He's an immigrant from Bangladesh, and he loved this city," said Adams.

“This child’s seven months (since her mother became pregnant). Unfortunately, the family was targeted in yesterday’s bombardment in the area of al-Attar. They were safe in the tents. Of course, the mother died, unfortunately. There was an attempt to save the baby. Now, her condition is very critical. She is on a ventilator, but she is at a very sensitive stage. STORYLINE:

A newborn died Monday afternoon, hours after she was delivered in a surgery following the killing of her mother in Gaza Strip, a hospital said.

Soad al-Shaer, a seven-months pregnant woman, was one of 12 Palestinians who were killed in an Israeli overnight airstrike in the Muwasi area, east of Khan Younis, according to the Nasser Hospital.

The strike flattened a family house and destroyed several neighboring tents sheltering displaced people, including al-Shaer and her family, said her husband Ibrahim Qeishtah, who was injured along with their three other children.

The baby survived after a complex cesarean birth at the Muwasi field hospital, which is operated by the Palestinian Red Crescent.

The newborn girl, who was named Soad after her mother, was then taken to the Nasser hospital. There she fough... [truncated]
