A group trekking through Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest had a frightening – though not completely unexpected – encounter with a silverback gorilla, as the powerful animal came barreling down a hill, roaring and baring his teeth.
Wildlife conservationist Callum Perry captured this footage while on what he called a “once-in-a-lifetime trip” trekking through the forest, which is known for its gorilla population. He told Storyful he and his group were working to track a different gorilla family when they encountered the charging male.
“Two silverbacks had been competing with each other when one turned his rage toward us and came charging down the hill, almost crashing into us,” Perry said.
A tour company wrote that gorillas may perform real or mock charges if they perceive a threat to their group, humans or animals get too close, another male challenges his authority, or if they want to demonstrate strength without a fight.
“This was a rare occurrence and no one, gorilla or human, got hurt,” Perry said. “We then had an incredible time watching these beautiful animals in the wild and it is a memory to cherish for a lifetime. Seeing the gorillas in Bwindi was a dream come true.”
According to the Uganda Wildlife Authority, Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is “one of the best places on earth to experience gorilla trekking, offering visitors the chance to come face-to-face with these majestic primates in their natural habitat.”
