The roofs of two housing units at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP) in Lincoln suffered extensive damage in early hours of Saturday, August 9, as severe thunderstorms brought flashes of lightning and “destructive” wind to parts of the state.
The damage prompted the relocation of all 387 incarcerated people; 250 were moved within NSP, and 137 were transferred to the Omaha Correctional Center and the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution, the Nebraska Department of Correctional Services said.
The National Weather Service (NWS) warned of possible 80 mph and pea-sized hail. The NWS forecast additional thunderstorms into Saturday night and the early hours of Sunday morning bringing wind, hail, and possible flooding.
