A small earthquake rocked parts of New York and New Jersey on Tuesday — the second to be felt in the region in just a matter of days. The 2.7 magnitude quake was recorded near Hillsdale, New Jersey, just after noon, according to the US Geological Survey. The latest earth-rattling comes after a magnitude 3.0 quake struck in Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey, on Saturday night.
We asked Alex Nikulin, Associate Professor and Chair of Earth Sciences Department at Binghamton University, about the quakes and if the East Coast is prepared for something bigger.
