The heartbreaking loss of Air India flight AI171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick is an example of an extremely rare event: a large jet crashing on an intercontinental air route.

An Air India flight bound for London has crashed with 242 people on board in western India.

The Boeing 787 aircraft departed from Ahmedabad airport in the western Indian state of Gujarat at 1.39pm local time (8.09am BST) on Thursday.

But after issuing a mayday call, it crashed into a residential area called Meghani Nagar just five minutes after taking off, India’s civil aviation authority confirmed.

Video and images from the city show plumes of smoke pouring from the wreckage of the plane, with firefighters seeking to douse the charred remains of buildings impacted by the crash.

Watch as a British national who claims he survived the Air India plane crash walks away from the disaster which claimed the lives of over 200 people.

Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, 40, said he managed to escape almost certain death by jumping off the plane before it crashed into a residential area in the city of Ahmedabad on Thursday (12 June).

Footage shows the 40-year-old surrounded by a flock of people as he walks away from what is thought to be the site of the crash. He appears to be relatively unscathed.

Reports have claimed that Ramesh is the sole surviving passenger of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, which crashed with 240 people onboard.

An Air India flight headed for London Gatwick with more than 240 people on board crashed in India shortly after takeoff on Thursday.

The plane plummeted into a residential area after leaving an airport in the western city of Ahmedabad, local police said.

Footage from the scene showed huge clouds of black smoke billowing from the crash site and part of the body of the Boeing 787 aircraft on a building, while other images show emergency services working to douse the wreckage and surrounding buildings.

Authorities say many people have been killed, with at least 30 bodies recovered from a building at the site of the crash, Reuters reports, with rescue workers saying more people remained trapped inside.

There were 242 people on board the flight, including 12 crew members. Air India said the passengers included 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese citizens and one Canadian.

Both the Indian and British prime ministers said authorities were keeping them updated about the incident.

“It is heartbreaking beyond words,” Narendra Modi said on X. Sir Keir Starmer said the scenes were “devastating”.

A human-sized Labubu figure sold for 1.08 million yuan (£111,000) at auction on Tuesday, setting a new record for the "blind box" toy as it moves from craze to collectable.

The event held by Beijing auction house, Yongle International Auction, which traditionally specialises in modern art as well as jewellery, marked the first ever auction dedicated to Labubu.

The toothy monster figurines, mainly sold by China's toy company Pop Mart, have been at the centre of a global frenzy for the past year.

A new angle shows the final moments - from take-off to crash - of the doomed Air India flight on its way to London, Gatwick.

CCTV footage shows the Boeing 787 Dreamliner leaving the runway at Ahmedabad Airport on Thursday (12 June) before it begins descending rapidly in its nose-up take-off angle.

Moments later the plane, with 240 people onboard, erupted into a huge fireball as it crashed into a residential area.

Authorities in India have said that 204 bodies have been recovered so far from the crash site.

Unconfirmed reports have claimed that Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British national, is the sole survivor of the crash.

Homes have been destroyed after several nights of unrest in Northern Ireland, where rioters hurled petrol bombs, masonry and fireworks at police.

The violence broke out in Ballymena on Monday (9 June) following an alleged sexual assault on a girl in the area, and unrest has since spread across the country.

Footage from Ballymena shows one home left charred after being set on fire, and another with its doors and windows smashed.

More than 30 police officers have been injured, and multiple properties and vehicles have been set on fire.

Ethnic minorities appeared to be targeted, with a senior police officer condemning the violence as “racist thuggery”.
