A 5.8 magnitude earthquake has struck western Turkey and nearby Greek islands, with the ensuing panic leaving one dead and at least 69 people injured.

The epicentre of the earthquake on Tuesday morning (3 June) was just outside the Turkish resort town of Marmaris, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), at a depth of 68km (42 miles).

There was no tsunami alert from the EMSC, but heavy shaking was felt in Rhodes just 29km to the south, as well as on other islands around the Aegean Sea.

A man has been charged with a federal hate crime and 16 counts of attempted murder, after 12 people were injured in an attack on a “Run For Their Lives” event in Boulder, Colorado, on Sunday afternoon, a gathering for activists demanding the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attacker shouted “Free Palestine!” before firing incendiary devices, including a “makeshift flamethrower” and Molotov cocktails, at the demonstrators, according to the FBI, which is investigating what it has called “a targeted terror attack.”

Suspect Mohamed Sabry Soliman is said to have told authorities he spent a year planning the attack and had researched and specifically targeted a “Zionist group.”

Sir Lindsay Hoyle accused the government of committing a “blatant breach” of the ministerial code over how it released details of a major defence review on Monday, 2 June.

The Speaker took exception to details of the strategic defence review (SDR) being briefed out over the weekend and Sir Keir Starmer holding a media event several hours before the document was published in Parliament.

Making it clear that the House of Commons, rather than the media, should be informed first, Sir Lindsay said of Labour: “This shows complete disregard for the House and for the honourable members.”

"The government appears to have breached the principle set out in paragraph 9.1 of the ministerial code – that when Parliament is in session, the most important announcements of government policy should be made in the first instance in Parliament.”

Defence secretary John Healey delivers a speech in parliament on Monday following Sir Keir Starmer's warning that Britain “cannot ignore the threat Russia poses."

The prime minister outlined new defence measures including extra attack submarines, £15 billion on nuclear warheads and thousands of new long-range weapons.

The government’s long-awaited strategic defence review concluded that the nation should be ready for war in Europe or the Atlantic.

But questions remained about Starmer's plans to increase defence spending to the recommended level.

The government will increase defence spending to 2.5 per cent of gross domestic product from April 2027 with an “ambition” – but no firm commitment – to increase it to 3 per cent during the next parliament.

Co-opting a famous phrase from the 1980 John Belushi-Dan Aykroyd classic The Blues Brothers, Donald Trump posted a cryptic meme on Wednesday night declaring that he is “on a mission from God” which also features an alt-right symbol in the background.

Showing the president walking down a dark city street, the image includes the caption “nothing can stop what is coming.” While the meme itself could be interpreted as the president’s response to the U.S. Court of International Trade striking down the majority of his “Liberation Day” tariffs, it was the image’s inclusion of Pepe the Frog – and the fact that it originated from a “groyper” account – that has drawn the most attention.

A dive-bombing buzzard has forced a village primary school to ban children from going outside following a spate of attacks.

The bird of prey has been attacking villagers in Havering-atte-Bower, near Romford, Essex, since Easter weekend, according to residents.

Dame Tipping Primary School said “nothing can be done” but to keep pupils inside due to the animal being a protected species.

Mount Etna has erupted in Sicily, spewing a huge column of smoke and ash into the sky above the Italian island.

Footage shared on social media showed people running for their lives down the mountainside of Europe’s largest and most active volcano, as a thick column of smoke intensified above them.

Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology said in a widely reported statement that the volcano was experiencing strong strombolian explosions – a type of eruption – “of growing intensity”.

“Over the past few hours, the falling of a little thin ash has been flagged in the Piano Vetore area,” the statement said.

According to the Volcanic Discovery website, prior to the eruption there were volcanic tremors which began at around 10pm local time and reached their peak shortly before 1am.

The Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre in Toulouse, one of nine such centres worldwide used to monitor aviation risks, warned that a volcanic ash plume had reached an altitude of around 6,400 metres.
